Re 277.800 which I have down as a US Navy Guard Freq.:

Mode would be AM, right ?

Ever pick up anything on it ? Aircraft usage only ?

277.800 MHz will be in AM mode​

This frequency is guarded continuously by all U. S. Navy ships (except
submarines) when underway singly and by at least one ship of a group.
Coast Guard cutters may use this frequency to communicate with Navy
ships when required. The frequency may be particularly useful for
navigational purposes during periods of reduced visibility when entering
or leaving port if Navy ships are in the vicinity. The frequency is
also used by the Navy for local ship-shore harbor communications on a
secondary basis to intership use. ​

I have seen this frequency referred to on the actual radio gear as "Fleet Tactical". As mentioned, all Navy vessels monitor this channel.

Yes this frequency is Fleet Tactical or as me the OSs call it FLT TAC. It's used to pretty much say anything but its encoded by letters and numbers and you have to have a book to decode it so it's pretty much a bunch of jibber jobber unless you have a secret clearance in the navy and actually get to use the circuit ha ha. Has anyone picked it up though I live in suffolk and I dont think i can get it since after I'm so far away from the coast.

277.8- Fleet tactical is used by the navy during SEAFAIR.

277.8 MHZ is in the AM mode. It is not encrypted. USN Navy ships are required to continuously guard this frequency while underway (I think submarines may be exempt). If classified information (usually maneuvering commands, course, speed, etc) is passed, it is offline encrypted. You may, from time to time, hear aircraft on this frequency. This frequency’s primary use is for ships to contact one another when no pre-arranged frequency plan exists. It is referred to as Fleet Tactical or ‘FLTTAC’.

When referring to ‘guard’ the frequencies 243.0 (or less likely) 121.5 are usually what are being discussed.

277.8 is used every July 4th in the NY Harbor for the "parade of ships" navigating into the harbor for Fleet Week. Also have heard radio checks on occassion from Navy Waepons STA Earle here in NJ.
