Some one walked in asking about 27.185 MHz...
I work at a predominant radio shop in Ohio and we just had a gentleman come in with a story about how all his construction company commercial radios had started sounding funny and "off" and the guys were having a heck of a time talking to each other. In asking about the system (we don't do commercial radios here but I was very curious) he mentioned the company had a system set up by some folks in NJ. Hmm. The antenna on his truck looked suspiciously like a CB antenna. I asked him what frequency his radios were on and he took out his phone and called it up. He told me 27.185. I told him that was CB Ch 19! He said he never heard any truckers there but mentioned the radios had channels 1-40 and a switch that went from A-F (or something like that - my brain was already in overdrive by this point).
I called up a chart showing him that he was indeed on Channel 19. He then said the company had put a repeater tower in his business back yard that these went through and told me they transmit on one freq and receive on another - what repeaters do. So, I told him it was quite likely he was in potentially serious violation and that he was likely transmitting in FM mode. Strike 2. I suggested he had a repeater issue as all the radios started sounding off at the same time.
I have yet to find anything on a Silver Star radio in the 27MHz range but I suspect the company out of NJ sold him a legal hassle and illegal system. He said they had an FCC License and everything. He didn't have the call sign or the document handy. I suggested strongly he get in touch with these guys and see what the heck is up. I suspect they printed up the "license" themselves and sold him an illegal CB FM system from overseas.
