296D serial adapter

Hello, I do not have a serial port on my computer that will accept the cable that comes with the 296D. I want to get a replacement or an adapter so I can program the scanner and sucessfully download the newest firmware. I bought a serial to usb adapter which has given me trouble. (see my other post) Can anyone tell me of the correct adapter or what else I could do? Thank You.

You need the latest driver for your adapter. Go to the manufacturer's web site, download it and install it.

I did that, and it did not work. I have got to be doing something wrong. I just don't know what.

Who is the manufacturer? Aten drivers are known to not be worth much.
