Any one know why when I program my 296D & 796D the exact same way for an APCO 25 UHF digital system, the 796 works and actively seeks ID's while the 296D searches and finds nothing????

Did you program them by hand or with software? The 296D and 796D have the same pc interface for programing.

I programed both of them by hand. The 296 first, followed by the 796.
I would recomend that you use the software that came with the 796 and read what you have in it then load that info into the 296. As far as the software the 796 and 296 are the same radio. When programing a trunked system, it is much easier with the software and it's easier to see and fix any little errors. The most common one I get is the wrong step setting and it rounds off the freq.
