Recently bought a defective 296d off ebay that had the polarity reversed and it took out a 2sb1803 high speed switching transistor...Well ordered a replacement and replaced the faulty one..Fast forward..worked well for three day's and then started re-booting shutting off and on every 10 min's or so.Guess what blew the same transistor again..So i studied the print as best i could to see what exactly this part was doing and it was actually being used as a voltage regulator and it was a surface mount and they were using the pc board of all things for cooling. The stock part was only rated at 500ma max current and running the scanner + Charging the battery at the same time i think is just pushing this part to it's max..So i came up with a way to use a 7805 voltage regulator at the b+ line at the input and it's rated at 1 amp..I soldered it to a big metal shield for max cooling..The Scanner used to get very hot if the battery's were dead and i charged it while playing the scanner at the same time...Now runs very cool at all times...Fixed
