Sue for what?
I mean, if the batteries used for the SDS100 are so dangerous that they could start a fire in someone's home, wouldn't it seem like something like that would've happened and the company would've been sued for not making sure their products were safe?

Never thought I’d say this but a Unication pager is sounding better and better. Never heard of a swelling battery issue with those.

Bought a Unication Pager a few months back.

For P25 reception it blows my Uniden scanners out the water, receives P25 systems from the neighboring state with its supplied little antenna that the Unidens need a tuned antenna for, even then you have to find the sweet spot to get reception.

Also has outstanding battery life, a bright, sharp color display, excellent audio and is built like a tank (commercial grade construction).

Not as feature-rich as the Unidens since it's not a scanner, but there are some work arounds.

Forgot to add, purchased it from Ray's Pager Sales and got excellent customer service, highly recommended.

I tried the unication route. it has stellar receive but i could not tolerate the amount of hiss produced by the audio circuit. the speaker is loud and can be heard from across the street, but when you're trying to listen at night on very low volume levels the hiss is louder than the speech. I bought mine from Rays as well and the transaction was great (as they always are when you're buying something) but when asked if the hiss was normal I was placed on the back burner and he never got back to me. When I mentioned it again it was as if it never happened. compared to my friends G5 at the time his also had an audible hiss albeit less than mine. Since this was pretty much the nature of the beast, I sold it and moved on. Also, unless their policy has changed, unication won't work on anything greater than 5 years old, doesn't matter if they are used for public safety or recreational listening. something to consider before making a purchase. the older and grumpier i get, the more i try to accept that we can still have nice things, just don't expect them to work properly or last long :)

There is a slight audio hiss on my Unication unit.

Not to the extent that I find it distracting though.

The quiet hiss is frequently interrupted by crystal clear, perfect P25 audio.

we must have different hearing capabilities. IIRC if the volume is 15 or lower, the hiss is quite audible. In a quiet office environment when you turn up the volume so that you can clearly hear what is being said, it is accompanied by 50% hiss, which to me was unacceptable. YMMV.

I have the same on my G4.

To set the record straight, this is not the case. Unication stated they will not enforce this policy after an outcry from users. We spoke, they listened.

where is the confirmation from unication? if this is the case then this is good news! last i heard, unication heard our concerns and was supposed to release a statement but no one updated that thread, this was back in october. Unication refusing to repair devices older than 5 yrs old

Either way, i think each pager repair should be a case-to-case basis. ruling out repair for a device merely 5 years old was a bad move IMO.

that's the same link i posted above.

on page 3 it says: "a solution is coming and we will announce more information in the coming weeks."

and on the next page w2lie said: " Unication is working on a process to resume repairing older pagers. As per a conversation I had with them last week, they should have more details coming out shortly on the new program."

just wondering if there has been anything official released from unication.

to get semi back on topic, the battery used in the unications, at least when i owned mine last year was in fact a lithium-ion. i'd take that over the polymer any day. :)

I checked with Ray at Ray's Pagers (a Unication authorized dealer.) His reply:

"We as dealers were never given any official notification of that reversal.
However, the few units that we ran across that were over 5 years old, they accepted repair/replace with their fee.
So as of now we were just submitting them again."

So, since all repairs must be processed through a dealer and Unication is accepting >5 year old pagers for repair, that is about as "official" as we are going to get (Unication does not seem to bother with RR Forums anymore.)

This is the only thing I HATE about my SDS 100, the damn proprietary batteries. I believe some after market might even reduce and possibly eliminate the problems associated with these batteries. In my opinion, the camera industry has made a better Nikon FX battery. I don't see why the scanner industry does not offer one, unless Uniden holds the reins and refuses to let go.

My battery is five years old and no swelling. It mostly sits plugged into the charger. So there's that.

My SDS100 is an early unit (small battery supplied), received the larger battery from Uniden free of charge and purchased as extra one of my own with the Uniden external charger which I use to charge the batteries.

No battery swelling issues to date...

Speaking of Li-Po batteries. I had a Samsung S10 that was fine until I took it out of the Otter case. As soon as I did that the back case got pushed off due to the swelling battery. That sucked.
Think you mean Li-Ion.

that sucks... lipo and li-ion require a certain charge and discharge voltage and method. it makes me rethink how i've been abusing my milwaukee batteries all these years but i guess they have their charging technology down because they are still working. I have a 2.0 M12 battery in a hex impact driver that still works like new and it's almost 10 years old. and otter cases rock!
