'SDR' was purely marketing buzz attached to the SDS radios. Nobody in their right mind would compare the capabilities of an SDS scanner to a true SDR.

I’ve talked to a few who say even the previous non SDS models were considered somewhat SDR’s. I don’t know if they were referring to the software programming we use to “write” to the scanner’s memory but I guess it all depends upon each individual’s definition of SDR. You might want to define your definition of “true” SDR as opposed to those who are not in their right mind when they describe the Uniden SDS series as SDR’s.

"Software-defined radio (SDR) is a radio communication system where components that conventionally have been implemented in analog hardware (e.g. mixers, filters, amplifiers, modulators/demodulators, detectors, etc.) are instead implemented by means of software".

"Significant amounts of signal processing are handed over to the general-purpose processor, rather than being done in special-purpose hardware (electronic circuits). Such a design produces a radio which can receive and transmit widely different radio protocols (sometimes referred to as waveforms) based solely on the software used."

A number of definitions can be found to describe Software Defined Radio, also known as Software Radio or SDR. The SDR Forum, working in collaboration with the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) P1900.1 group, has worked to establish a definition of SDR that provides consistency and a clear overview of the technology and its associated benefits. Simply put Software Defined Radio is defined as:

"Radio in which some or all of the physical layer functions are software defined"

Nobody would ever hold up their SDS and say "Look, I have a SDR!" It's a scanner, and despite the fact there's an SDR inside... that's just implementation details that Uniden capitalized upon with their marketing. Their use of a cheap SDR inside was really driven by the need to get a true IQ output so that they could finally make a scanner that wasn't subject to LSM distortion. Apart from that... there no other compelling SDR-like features.

Compare that to the Alinco DJ-X11 which actually can be used like a traditional SDR because it supports IQ output.

This is what is holding me back from this scanner. If it wasn't for the loooooooong recharge time and the bomb batteries I would've picked one up.

Extra batteries and an external charger are available...
So, what's stopping you now?
I'd say the reason is what the OP said in the message you replied too.

The "loooooooong recharge time and the bomb batteries".

I've had my SDS100 with the larger battery since end of 2019, charged and discharged that factory battery hundreds of times. Bought a backup battery and charger that I've never had to use yet. Still runs great, no swelling ever.

Technically, ALL LiIon batteries are "bomb batteries"...
It is just the chemestry - and heat.
But.... making a decision on what radio to get because of the possibility of a swelling battery....(?)

Dell XPS 13 - rated consistently one of the best laptops for many years.
I've probably now had 4-5 of them, as they have evolved
And YES, I've taken 2 of them apart and replaced batteries because the keyboard was definitly warped....
Doesn't make a great computer, less great......

The radio is good for what it is meant for - don't let the Internets 'noise' get in the way.
External charger and extra batteries - winner, winner, chicken dinner.

How long does it take to recharge? With all the extra batteries I could buy a HT.
The big battery are a little more than 5000mAH and charging are done at 500mA, so it takes 10 hours if the battery are totally dead. Power banks are cheap, $25 for 5,000AH, and you can use a magnetic USB cable you can use in different angles and easily detach and the remaining connector on the scanner are so small you can still close the rubber flap.

Has this battery issue been presented to, and addressed by Uniden? I don't want to buy any more batteries until something is resolved. Every battery that I have had has swelled and become useless. While the scanner works without a battery sitting on my desk, it is worthless as a portable, which was kinda of the point of buying the SDS100. A lot of money for something with a nagging little problem like a battery.

Report it to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

File a class action lawsuit.

ok, so now im getting really worried about my battery...

so i work with date codes and shelf life materials all day at work.
and from what im seeing, there is a really big problem.

so from the OP pics we can see that the Date Code is 2021D
that means the Date of Manufacture (DOM) is 04/2021
letters go A~L - A-Jan, B-Feb, C-March etc.

in later photos of the inside of the battery package, the 3 cells say 03/2021
so obviously 04/21 is just when the 3 cells became 1 unit.

-recap-
battery cell dom 03/21
battery purchased 09/2021
bloated by 12/2022

thats only a 21 month old battery.... WOW !!

my problem is.... the D/C on my battery is 2021L which is 12/2021
but who knows what the DOM is on the actual cells.
i just got my new radio 12/2023. so my batter was ALREADY 24 MONTHS OLD when i got it...

should i just buy a new battery now and see what i get, and hope for a 2023 ?
