today, Wednesday, Jan 7th, I stopped into a RadioShack store on SR434 in Longwood, Florida to purchase a small switch for work. I asked the store manager if they had any Pro-106 scanners in stock, he told me no and he looked up the next closest RS store that has them in stock. There are 3 (THREE) pro-106 scanners available as of this writting in the Orlando RS store on Orange Blossom Trail. I called the store in Orlando at 5:30 pm, and the Orlando store confirms that they still have 3 in stock. If anyone is in need of one, I guess you could call the store for directions, or go to the RS website and search zip code 32809 and the store should come up . Good luck to any interested parties.

This might be your chance to get your hands on one... for a while, they are sold out almost everywhere else, including the RS websites on-line sales. This Orlando store has them for $399.00 for anyone who feels like taking the drive to Orlando.

Right here...
There "was" one in Valdosta,Ga but it is on my desk now. I had a friend who just happened to be in Valdosta on business and he was nice enough to give it a ride home for me.

Me being new, is the scanner being phased out or just so popular that it's hard to find?

I have been looking around and the 106 and the PRO-197 were the ones I had narrowed it down too.

Comments/tips etc would be appreciated please.

Hello, I will bring ya up to speed. Radioshack has a scanner on the market now, known to us as the Pro-106 handheld digital scanner. Beutiful scanner I might add. Its a relitive of the PSR-500 scanner, another handheld that was being built a short while back by GRE. GRE builds the 106 for Radioshack, and the main difference is the placement of the speaker and the keypad on the front near the display screen. They kinda flip flopped the appearance of the face... an update from the GRE PSR500 version. RS started selling the Pro-106 for 500.00 and it went on sale around the holidays for 400.00 then RS had a BIG 36 HOUR sale back on December 18th. The sale started on the 18th at midnight, and they sold out in a matter of a few short hours. The sale price was 299.99 and after they sold out, there were none available on the RS website... stores really had none in stock, and there were no rainchecks or backorders on line thru the RS website. The price after XMas went back up to 400.00 and I think its still advertised for 400.00 but there are still none in stock. The Pro-106 is a HOT item right now, and people will probably never find it again for the sale price of 299.99 but they will find it on line and in RS stores in a few short weeks. I am guessing a few short weeks, as it has not been released to the public yet, as to when they will have any more available. The 106 is virtually a replica of the PSR500 and ya cant go wrong buying either one. Hope this brought you up to speed, take care.

Thanks Kevin, so is the only difference being that the PRO-197 is a base unit and the PRO-106 is a handheld unit? All the other specs are about the same?
If so, I would probably want to hold out and wait for the PRO-106.....right? I mean, I've gone without it for this long, I can surely wait a little while longer....lol

This would be strictly for personal, casual monitoring and having fun.

holding off for the 106 would be my suggestion, its entirely up to you. I prefer to use my 106 handheld as a base in the house at almost all the time, especially because its illegal to have your scanner in the car with you here in florida. I have my 106 wired to an outdoor roof discone antenna, using some serious coax cable, and it gets the job done. I have no reception issues at all. The 106 is the best scanner I have ever owned, and ever seen for sale in the scanner market to date.

Thanks, have decided to hold off till more 106's become available. Even RS online is out and they won't back order :-( .
I did read in th RS forum where a store owner in Colorado said it would be Feb before any more would come in.
So I'll just sit and twiddle my thumbs....lol

You may not have to hold off... check the RR "equipment for sale" area... there were some members selling new 106 scanners right here on RR. I bought one for a friend last week and I just got a tracking number for it yesterday. I know its on the way to me, and I will program it for my friend once it arrives here. There were 106's available, and its worth looking into. Also, there were RR members selling the GRE PSR-500 which is virtually the same scanner, I saw some on RR "equipment for sale" and the prices were pretty good. Ya might want to check out the items for sale by RR members first, before ya give up and feel that ya have to hold off. Just an idea, take care.

Kevin is right, you might still be able to find one thru one of the members and save a few bucks. One thing to consider when going with a handheld or the base for that matter. Is the extra accessories that you may want or need. With the base you get the power supply the portable it is a separate item. Batteries and/or a charger. And the USB cable. Good Luck

hoser is right on the money... when viewing new or used scanners in the "equipment for sale" area, be sure to take notice if the seller of a radio, especially rhe Pro-106 such as your interested in, comes with any accesories. I had found what I thought was a geed deal there. I had found a Pro-106 for around 450.00 dollars, and I know that price doesn't look or sound attractive, however, that seller was also including a 9vdc 800 mha wall-wart power supply, and the 32.00 RS 20-047 USB cable w/ a cd driver disk, and his CD disk of PSRedet500 scanner programming software with his registration key. Because it was a "complete" set-up of scanner and accessories, I chose to buy it from that RR member, and I feel it was one of the best deals out there that best suited the needs of a good friend of mine. I know my friend is not computer savy, he wants me to program the entire scanner for him, and I am allowed to keep the software programming disk as per my friends approval. Everybody wins here, and you can too if ya find the right deal on RR. Definitely check out the RR for sale area... ya wont be dissappointed. Ya might dind the deal of the century. Take care, and HAPPY MONITORING !!

Thanks again for the heads up.
