I updated the firmware last night (monumental PITA) and today I'm hearing them. Oddly, I don't see the signal strength meter at all now.

I utilized a prime listening spot in Port Townsend this afternoon, and logged a few new 380 DOD TRS (14C) sites.

Glad it's not just me, let me know how it goes.

I did the first firm upgrade that came with getting the ESN number to register. I then had to levae and drive by the base. I have to say there was a vast improvement. Some channels came in clear and followable. Some were still not that clear. I just did the second firm update and let you know if that has helped as well.

I'm going to publicly postulate the theory that, since I can hear it from every-damn-where, the Navy tower 102 is on Gold Mountain.

I can get it 99% in Puyallup, Tacoma, and points south, 95-99% in the Kent/Renton valley, 99% in Port Townsend, etc.

Still need to build that damn RDF.

I can pick it up down in the lowest point in tacoma where I cant pickup anything else.

I have Ft Lewis programmed in my 396 but I'm not hearing anything. Has anyone successfully managed to program the 396 with this system, and if so, PLEASE tell me what you did. I work on McChord so I'm close enough that I should be able to hear it.

Mainsail,

In your scanner, go Select MENU > Settings > See Scanner Info > Firmware Verson. What version do you have? Updating my firmware seemed to help my problem with Ft Lewis (although I havent had a chance to really take it around the block)

DOD P25 - Pro96Com Reports - Site Neighbors.

DOD P25 - Pro96Com Reports - Site Neighbors.

Here is the list of site's that was logged by Pro96com Software.
Notice none of the DOD sites in Washington State listed on the database page had the 'Site Neighbors' listed yet.

These were logged on July 18th,24th,25th, 2008 from the cruise ship port.
and some heard from Victoria, Canada(Site 108,111,109,113,110,107,112)

If any one wants to look at the Pro96com files. Just PM for the link to them.

BOLD = Needs to be Added/Changed to the RR Database page!
Plus add all the 'Site Neighbors' to the database.

If anyone has anything to add or see something wrong. Let us know!

Someone still needs to log the other sites for 'Site Neighbors' So it can be listed on the database.

Poor Man's RDF

I'm going to publicly postulate the theory that, since I can hear it from every-damn-where, the Navy tower 102 is on Gold Mountain.
I can get it 99% in Puyallup, Tacoma, and points south, 95-99% in the Kent/Renton valley, 99% in Port Townsend, etc.
Still need to build that damn RDF.

Here is an inexpensive trick that any of you can use.
'The poor man's radio direction finder' is Basically, a tinfoil baking pan,
folded into a 3x7 box, 5 in deep. Put the scanner inside without the
antenna, maximum squelch, and attenuation on. Set it on a control
channel. Aim it towards a transmitter and the audio comes on. Aim
it away, and the sound quits.

In Jan 2002 before the Winter Olympics in Utah, we locals were trying
to determine the location of all the secret Olympic trunked sites.
Some sites were receivable only near the venue, while others seemed
to be everywhere. I used the Poor Man's RDF to locate the sites.
As I traveled along the freeway, the signal was always strong, but
after I exited the freeway, the signal dropped completely within one block.
Conclusion: The main Olympic TRS was being simulcast from cell towers
located along the freeway.

Oct 2004, Salt Lake City launched a new TRS.
We wondered where the sites were located.
As I drove past the Union Station in SLC, the signal was so strong,
that even putting the radio-in-a-box on the floor of the van would not
disrupt the signal. I was very near a transmitter. A block further,
the signal was gone. I had no reception to the front or either side.
I went west on 600 north, and again the signal got strongest next to
the Jordan River. A block west of Redwood, and no signal.
Signals were very strong near the Gatsby Power Plant, and also near
a cell tower near 1700 south Redwood Road.
This is exactly the same kind of setup that was in place during the Olympics.
They were transmitting from multiple cell sites along major streets & highways.

So, If any sites in your DOD system seem to be everywhere at once, they
may well be. The Poor Man's RDF is good for locating TRS sites because
the data channel transmits continiously.

Here in Utah, the Air Force owns the 400 Mhz TRS with 4 sites.
There is another 400 TRS used by the Army at Deseret Chemical Depot.
Rumor has it that US Army plans a 380 TRS at Dugway Proving Ground,
but no confirmation. Last check, they were still on VHF conventional.

Thanks for the tip Mike. I actually own a Ramsey RDF kit, and have for about 4 months now, but still haven't put it together (intimidating as hell, and no time).

The 380 P25 learning curve

While I am waiting for delivery of my PSR500, I am reading the mail on anything related to 380.
I notice you guys are collecting a lot of information, but I couldn't locate any site specific data on RR.
Is there a private database so that DOD folks don't have anxiety attacks?

What I want to know is do you have to program the Base, Offset, & Step for the sites?

The database entry for the 380 DOD system is wonky, but I haven't had time to submit proper updates.

Don't worry about the base and offsets for true P25 trunked systems if you're using the PSR500. Set the system type for P25 Auto, and the radio will do the rest.

I agree the DOD 380 database is wonky! and missing those Navy(385.### MHz sites).

I just got permission from Lindsay to work on this 'wonky' mess.
This should be cleared up within the next 30days (I hope).
Just need to find another DB person to work with that understand how these sites are run.
