Hi,

Would the C.G. S&R freq. of 381.800 be AM or fm ?

I guess I'm uncertain as my freq. chart shows it as a Land-Mobile freq. ?

Thanks,
Bob

That would be AM, Bob. With few exceptions, transmissions from civil and military aircraft between 108-137 MHz and 225 - 400 MHz would be in the AM mode.

However, if you are looking for the Coast Guard on 381.8, you may not hear much. The Coast Guard and others have been moved out of the 380-400 MHz end of the DoD air band assignments to make way for new land-mobile assignments there, so your chart is correct. The new UHF air band channels can be found in the RR Wiki here:

For Chris: C.G. Land Mobile ?

Chris,

Forgot to ask, although it's probably a silly question.

What, exactly, does Land-Mobile imply for the C.G. ?
They don't do much on land, do they ?

Is it only for emerg;s like Katrina, etc., that they need land mobile comms ?

Thanks,
Bob

The Coast Guard has a large number of VHF and UHF land-mobile assignments for their use. They tend to be used for law enforcement and base station operations, not so much for search & rescue operations. Any CG air station will most likely have ground maintenance and or security channels in use. The CG helicopters, aircraft and ocean going vessels tend to stick to the HF or VHF marine channels. However, they do have, and sometimes use digital encryption for certain interdiction & law enforcement operations.
