Here on Cape Cod in Massachusetts we're getting our usual midwest skip this evening. Missouri Highway Patrol is loud and clear on many 42 MHz frequencies. Some 39 Mhz activity as well. I miss hearing CHP here; it's been quite a long time. It used to be a regular occurrence, but very rare these days for some reason.
In Tucson Arizona I am hearing a lot of CA and some other low band fire around 39 and 38 Mhz with just my PRO-97 and telescoping antenna. I am also hearing a lot of CB skip that I usually don't hear on my 97 but the CB radio hears it all the time.
The California Highway Patrol is almost exclusively 39-42mHz with some odd non-dispatch frequencies. Although we are at the lowest part of the sun cycle "skip" traffic can still be heard. The best time to listen is as the sun is rising or setting -- grey line propagation.
The best skip I had heard like this was when stationed in Germany as a Military Policeman. We used a lowband freq of 39 and 45 something and at about 2am local time we were listening to a high speed chase in Kansas! Being an avid scanner listener back then as well I was thrilled!
The sunspot cycle is beginning to slowly turn up. I work 20 meters daily and regularly work eastern Europe and the south pacific.
