396 Battery charging question.

So today I'll be getting my 396XT,

If I DO NOT want my batteries charging in the unit. Is it safe to put the rechargeable batteries in the unit, flip the switch and let it connected to the AC charger most of the day/night and leave it on the batteries when in the car? (until I get a car power adapter).

Some places say no, some say yes.

yes

if you set it to alkaline it will not charge the batteries.
you can even have the batteries out.
of course if you set it not to charge, you then have to charge them.
and that is what a lot of folks do here.
a smart charger is recommended. that is one that cuts off and not just 14 hours of charging
i use the maha 9000. and also have extra batteries.
