396 Programming help

Since the 396 is my first digital scanner I don't have any experience programming digital frequencies.

How would the following be entered?:

Frequency  Tone     Mode  
453.45000  123.0 PL APCO-25  
453.41250  152 DPL  APCO-25

Are these Conventional, Motorola-P25, something else?

The radio decodes digital automatically. You don't need to enter anything but the frequency.

What I'm saying is that there isn't anything you need to do. Just program up the conventional channels you have there as if they were not digital. Ignore the P25 stuff. There's nothing to do because the radio will decode the digital modulation automatically when it detects it.

Yep, it will say P25 in real small letters when it detects a digital signal. If it's encrypted it will say ENC and mute it.

Not in the same System, no you can't. Trunked freqs must be in their own systems. Conventional frequencies in a trunked system will be completely ignored.

I'm not sure it will for conventional freq's. I know it does for trunked, but there it gets the ENC designation from the control channel.

Good question. You have conflicting info there. They either use TONE OR P-25, but not both.

If they are P-25, leave the CTCSS/CDCSS set to NONE.

If they are analog with CT(D)CSS, set the CT(D)CSS to the tone/code frequency.

Okay, I see where your confusion is. The entry at New Haven County Connecticut for Bradford Fire is wrong. I will be changing it in a moment. But what you need to do in that case is set the frequenies up as just FM and hope that there are no other interfering signals in the area.

Actually both answers are correct. You must have a seperate Conventional System and a seoerate Trunked System but you can group them together by assigning them the same Quick-Key. If you assign two systems to one quick-key, i.e. Sys-XYZ-TRS and Sys-XYZ-CNV are assigned to Quick-Key 12 then they will both turn on or off at the same time. I do this with the local Sheriff's dept and it allows me to scan all their trunked stuff then briefly check the conventional channels for activity then back to the trunked again.
