396 Screen protector

I didnt want to make my scanner bulky and add a case, but I was wondering if anyone experimented with a PDA style screen protector to put on your 396's screen so it wont get scratched?

I use the PDA screen protector on all my scanners and have had no problems.

What do you do just lay it on the screen and then take a exacto knife and cut along the edges? I dont want to cut or scratch the screen when fitting it, but I want it to be perfect.

you could take a piece of paper, lay it over the screen area and trace the screen onto the paper, then use the tracing to cut the PDA overlay. You can also just measure the area and cut to size.

lots of options, but as you say, using an exacto knife on the scanner is a potential risk.

I use the screen protectors on mine as well. I lay it on per the instructions in the package. Then take a small hobby knife and lay in the groove around the screen and trim the excess. Looks abosolutely perfect. Can't even tell anything is on the screen. When I first put it on, there were some small bubbles that just wouldn't come out but I gave it a couple hours and they all went away. Just start on one side and apply the protector sticking it to the 396 screen as you go rubbing the bubbles out. There may be a few left when finished, but if it is like mine a couple house and they are gone. I used the same ones on my 246 and have the same results.

I use the PDA protectors made by 'Fellowes.' www.Fellowes.com Each protector is lined out on a grid and numbered both verically & horizontally. Simply line a protector up against any screen, then observe the numbers that match your screen. Then cut along those numbers. Even comes with a small squeegee-card. Dave

In a previous thread, someone said that ipod screen protectors fit perfectly, no trimming. I've been wanting to try this because I don't trust myself with the exacto knife. Here's the link:

I highly suggest using PDA covers on all my screens

If they're at least twice the size you can get two out of each one. The Belkin for the PPC are - I don't know about the Fellows.

I tried the Ipod screen protectors and thought they sucked. I think they degraded the visibility, . . (but that's just my opinion), YMMV. The WriteRIGHT screen protectors, model # 90002 and made by Fellowes work great. No need to worry about using an Xacto knife? Count the lines on the grid, . . cut with scissors. Looks to me like each protector could make at least 4.

When you say it has lines of a grid do they give you a template to trace onto the screen protector and then you cut it out, because the screen protector itself doesn't have lines or else that would be on your screen that you lay it on, correct?

That's correct. I use the same protectors. It even comes with grid numbers, so you can line the protector up to the face of the scanner, note the height and width numbers and then use an Exacto knife. The grid lines are on the backing only.

I will go with the Fellows 90002, I hope Office Depot sell them.
