I'm having some issues with my headphone jack on my 396, I on occasion use a shadow only listening ear tube that has a 3.5mm jack, when I unplug it I get no sound out of the speaker, this has happened a couple of times, but the problem usually goes away. I have it hooked up to an external speaker right now to be able to listen to it. Has anybody else had this problem before.

I've heard of it before something about the headphone jack still thinking there is earphones in it so the speaker stays off.

Sorry I don't know how to fix it short of replacing the actual headphone jack in the scanner

sounds like there's a 'lazy' or slightly bent contact in the socket. is the plug on the ear tube exactly the same design as your other one? there are slight differences on the plugs sometimes (though usualyy on older types)

This happens to me on occasion. I've found re-inserting and then removing the headphone plug corrects it.

There are many things to like about the 396. The uber-crappy headphone-jack is not one of them. It is a tiny plastic surface-mount jack. Its only physical support is the dots of solder holding it to the circuit-board. Both the jack itself and the solder-joints are prone to breaking. I've repaired mine on a few occasions by disassembly and reheating the cracked joints and a couple times by return to Uniden.

I now use strain-protection (loop the wire from the jack and then wire-tie it to the antenna). It helps. But it would have been nice to design the thing for real-world use.

The third attached photo shows the headphone jack (the pink highlighted dot).

Great pics, this all helps a lot. I have sent Uniden an email, but havn't heard anything yet. I've taken it apart, but I'm a bit warry of doing any solder work, I've done it on my Pro-83 before but that is a less expensive scanner.

You were right, this was the problem, I re-soldered the join and it works fine again.

Thanks very much for the info.
