I downloaded the BCD396T program from Uniden but when I try to select CONNECT TO SCANNER I get an error saying CHECK SCANNER REMOTE SETTINGS, what is that?

I downloaded the Belkin serial to usb drivers and the light is on on the cable. Shouldn't the 396T go into some sort of remote stage when connected to the computer?

Power off the scanner, then press L/O and 6 while plugging in the AC adapter to the scanner. The backlight will illuminate with nothing on the screen. You will then be in correct mode for PC to Scanner transfer.

Shaft made an assumption, which may be correct or not.

Which "program" was it that you downloaded?

If you are talking about the UASD program, you must set the scanner to match what the computer is looking for (as far as speed goes).

If you are talking about firmware updates than there is nothing to set in the radio.

UASD program, I only have 3 choices for comm port, when I check 3 it says no, check 10 no, check 9 it acts like it is reading it but wont connect then I get the communication error. What would the speed be for Windows XP?

COM port makes no difference in the radio, it has no idea what COM port is talking to and doesn't care. What it does care about is what speed you are trying to establish the RS232 communication on. That is the only thing you can set in the radio. The COM port comes in between the software and the computer, first make sure the software is looking at the correct COM port (check your system manager to see which one you should set it to) and the speed must match what the radio is looking for (that is set in the menu on the radio.)

Lou, okay I went into the scanner and UASD and changed each one together to each of the 5 baud rates and it will still not connect, I still get the comm error. How do I see if my computer is even seeing the scanner plugged into a USB port?

When I unplug the usb cord my computer dings and when I plug it back in it dings, so I think it is seeing it somehow. And I see the Belkin driver in my program files so that is there.

Lou,

I went under SYSTEM and under USB Root Hub it says Belkin USB plugged in, so I guess that is okay, but I dont see the baud rate?

Okay we have established that you are using a USB cable. Plugging and unplugging does not mean it is working when it "bings"; just that the computer knows a USB device was connected then unconnected.

USB use is a separate issue, but lets discuss it shortly. First you must have the USB device driver installed and properly working. Plug the cable into the computer then after it is recognized as being there, check your Device Manager, under System (Hardware) in the control panel to see if it is recognized and check which COM port is assigned.

Then set the software to that COM port and then set a similar speed on both the software and the radio. They should then talk.

When you go to SYSTEM (Device Manager) what COM port does the Belkin show up on?

Set that port in UASD. Set the speed in UASD to match the speed you set in the scanner.

II unplugged, the re-plugged Belkin usb in. Bing, then I went to System, Hardware, Device Manager, Universal Seria Bus Controllers, USB Root Hub, then I clicked that and it says only :

Belkin Serial on USB Port 100mA
3 port(s) available 0mA

On the front page under General it says: LOCATION 0

Look under "Ports", not controllers.

If nothing shows up there, the driver isn't installed properly.

Paul is correct. It should look something like this, but with your Belkin showing up somewhere in the list.
