396xt, "charge Off"

Can not make it charge with wall wart.
1-battery switch works
2-two sets of batteries work the same
3-remove batteries, shows "no battery"
4-batteries in, unit off, wall wart powered up/plugged into 396XT, screen says "Charge Off"

This radio is new to me, what am I missing?

Assuming that you are using rechargeable batteries, that they are installed in the proper polarity (the two outer ones face in the same direction and the middle one faces the opposite direction) and that the micro switch at the bottom of the battery tray is set to rechargeable batteries. If all are true, then Press "Menu", Scroll down to and select "Settings, Scroll down to and select "Battery Option", Scroll to "Set Charge Time", then enter the number of hours you want it to charge.
