396xt serial problem

I have a prolific pl2303 usb to serial adapter I have been using for sometime now to connect to my uniden 396xt. The last two day i have been having a problem losing connectivity on two different laptops after about 4-6 hrs of usage one laptop is using win7 other is using xp sp3 home. I can go into device manager on both and it is not showing a conflict or problem. but using freescan it can not detect my 396 neither can scanner cast it says no device connected. Any Ideas?? if more info is needed just ask.

How about when you select the correct COM port and run the program with that COM port?

correct com port is set in device manager and in both freescan and scanner cast. in freescan when I search for scanner auto search will take forever searching all ports and speeds , when i select port and speed manuallly and click search it say it found scanner but will not show model number. scanner cast just says scanner not connected. Edit: Update!!!! while inspecting usb to serial adapter I found a small chip that broke completely from the circuit board and was just floating around inside the adapter case. to verify it was the adapter i was able to find a pc at work that still has a serial port so I can test that side of it tomorrow but I feel confident its the adapter
