I have a friend who is selling a 396XT with a faulty volume/selector knob. He says it turns, but that the electrical contacts seem to not be working right, because the volume and such jumps around while being adjusted.

I know these multi-function knobs don't stand up to much long term use. How much is the part from Uniden to replace, and how difficult of a job is it to repair myself? Are we talking soldering circuit boards? :-O

IMO may not necessarily be the pot but most likely the solder connections on the board. Had the same symptoms you state on a 396T.
The solder connections on the board are very close together and small so one of those cheaper basic soldering irons may not work.
I recall if I pushed to one side the pot white turning helped sometimes and rather deduced that it was a solder joint problem for me rather than the pot itself.

Yes, you have to solder the part onto the board. The scroll control knob doesn't cost a lot at all. I have an extra one that I bought with a few other parts from Uniden. Like the other person said before me, the pins are very close together on the board; it will be tedious.

Part #: Rotary-BSRG0461001
Spring Plate-TSTD0200006 $0.50
Plastic Knob-GNBZ4B9810Z $0.25
