Here's the story: Phoenix police officers caught playing cards on duty | azfamily.com Phoenix

I have mixed feelings about it. Should these guys have been hanging out up there for hours at a time playing cards? Probably not. But goofing off at work is somewhat of an American tradition - look what happened the day Google's doodle was an actual playable version of Pac Man. Productivity in pretty much every office building in America ground to a near halt that day. So I'd guess based on that that most of us are no better. I bet even the high and mighty Gary Harper goofs off at work when he can get away with it. I know I do! ;)

The last bit about this story having legs worries me. It certainly does "have legs", but I think they should tread lightly for the sake of the rest of the media and general public who could soon lose the ability to monitor PPD because of 3TV's bumbling. Again.

Haha yep, everybody slacks off on the job, takes breaks, etc, even police officers. That's the reality and I'd be a hypocrite to judge them for that. However, these guys were just stupid enough to get caught, so they deserve the public embarrassment. What I want to know is how were they were not clever enough to hang out on the second to highest level, away from any public view?

I was thinking the same thing myself. Perhaps the new digital radios don't work as well down there as they do when you're all the way up on top of the structure? Or maybe they just figured since they had done it so long, no one cared? Who knows.

They really should have been a bit more discreet about it - that's just common sense. Perhaps only go up there for 30-40 minutes at a time and then go take a drive to another spot and play more cards somewhere else? LOL.... the more I think about it the more it makes me laugh. What a couple of goobers.

The reality of this will likely be that our card playing friends will be put on another detail in a different area until they learn how to goof off without prying eyes watching. That and they will get an "officer so and so messed up" note in their file about it. I seriously doubt anyone's going to get fired over it, no matter how many follow ups our tubby pal Gary Harper does about it. Going to the mayor... really, Gary? Really?? Do you think the man doesn't watch television? Why don't you go interview Sheriff Joe and Steven Seagal about it too? So ridiculous and such a blatant and piss poor attempt at payback for C-Deck going away. I'd love to see someone call Gary's fat *** on that.

"Mr. Harper, isn't this just a blatant attempt to embarrass the department in retaliation for the encryption of C-Deck which was brought on by one of your station's own journalists? Where are you going Gary? Don't run off, I want to talk to you..." LOL that would be priceless. I'd make a copy of that just to watch it again and again.

I'm sure people at 3TV read this forum. What say you? Don't just sit here quietly hiding your faces in embarrassment over this BS. Let's hear your rationale for this story. What do you hope to achieve with this mud slinging other than the complete encryption of PPD's radio traffic? Do you seriously think that couldn't happen? Did you guys not learn your lesson from the last debacle that cost us C-Deck? Do tell.

Well the silence from any 3TV staffers is deafening, so I guess they don't have any comment. What a surprise.

The whole mess makes me glad I'm moving to Tucson soon. I've definitely had my fill of Phoenix PD versus the News Media along with all the politics and BS. Sounds like the media down there at least has enough sense to not abuse their access to PD comms and to not try to catch TPD with their pants around their ankles every time it's sweeps, unlike a certain other news outlet up here who basically thinks their s*** don't stink...

There's no guarantee that any 3TV staffers are on these boards, and there's also a possibility that, if they are, they may be prohibited from commenting, by company policy.
I don't like the apparant tit for tat going on between 3TV and Phoenix PD. That said, I also don't think any officers should be spending 2-3 hours at a time just parked somewhere out of sight, instead of patrolling, or at least parked somewhere conspicuios, where they could be a visible deterrant to anyone up to no good.
The residents should have called Phoenix PD with their concerns, instead of the media. But, what happened, happened. The officers are under an IA investigation, and it's being taken care of. It remains to be seen if there's any fallout from this, in regards to citizen and media access to police radio communications. We shall see, I guess.
