So the news reported 4 police involved shootings over the weekend where police killed 4 different people in 4 different shootings. No wonder why they want the hot calls encrypted!

The thugs in this country are getting bolder, more brazen and more violent - naturally you can expect more cops to pull the trigger in defense of themselves versus becoming another entry on Officer Down Memorial Page (ODMP)

Having traffic on encrypted channels will not prevent you from eventually finding out how many cop shootings their were.

We came across the scene of one of them accidentally. Went to get tacos at Taco Bell at 43 Ave & Dunlap/Olive and the lot was taped off with about 10 Phoenix & Glendale PD units and all the media trucks. Only found out later what happened. Didn't have the scanner on when it happened so didn't hear anything. It was Phoenix detectives who were involved, so probably wouldn't have heard much anyway, probably just a broadcast on 9 A/C for additional help and probably the fire call for person shot.

One of the incidents occured in Mesa, involving Mesa PD and US Marshals, so it wouldn't have been on any Phoenix deck to begin with.
The guy who was shot after picking up a 5" broken table leg was part of a roommate dispute. That probably started on A/B.

Wow... seems like everytime I go out of town, something crazy happens on the scanner. The most memorable incident that went down while I was away was when the two news helos collided over Steele Indian Park. I was literally on an airplane somewhere over Texas when that happened. I seem to be some sort of catalyst for insanity to occur when I leave town.

I agree police should defend themselves but couldn't a taser or less lethal means work against someone with a broken table leg? One shooting looks like a suspect didn't even have a weapon officers thought he was going for one. It would be interesting to find out how many PPD involved shootings there have been compared to other large cities.

Statistics like that can probably be Googled, although they'll probably be a couple of years old as it takes time to collect and sort things like that.

If the officer was in immediate danger of being injured, the force was justified. I wasn't there.

One shooting looks like a suspect didn't even have a weapon officers thought he was going for one.

Another justified shooting. You don't get a second chance to wonder if, if indeed there was one.

I don't know any statistics, but its probably no different then most. Here in SD we have them all the time as officers are threatened by drug crazed lunatics and the mentally unstable. The cop has the right to go home at the end of the days work, just like any one else holding a job.

What does one have to do with another? Regardless if the shootings are justified or not (and it sounds like they were), the public has the right to know about the shootings. Encryption won't prevent us and shouldn't prevent us from finding out about these incidents, only keep us from hearing the transmissions as they happen. Police and Fire Departments have Public Information Officers for a reason.

There should me more stringent hiring practices in place along with comprehensive semi to annual requal. If the officier can no longer cut it on the street move them inside or out the door. A 6'2" male had an extended baton swinging like heck, did I shoot him, no I took it away and he went to jail. Me personally if I had shot him I would have to have quit.

There are to many inexperienced unqualified officers on the street these days. Yes there are justified shoots however now with the lower standards many many are not called for period.

Thank you! I didn't mean to offend anyone with this post, I didn't think so many people would say shoot ask questions later. It makes me feel good a Police Officer agrees!

I know they have PIOs but they tell you what they want to tell you, and before long when everything is ENC you will have to rely solely on them.

Again I am not saying they weren't justified shootings, im just pointing out that these are happening more and more, and some shooting victims don't even have a firearm etc... Again im glad a Police Officer stated what he did about training, and being fit enough to do the job. PGNSUCKS is an officer I would respect and want protecting my city! Thank you for your service where ever you work.

Great that you were able to take the stick away in your situation but does that qualify you to speak on behalf of the PPD officer involved in the situation here? Where you there? I will stand corrected if you have first hand information related to the shootings the OP is speaking of.

No I do not have any specifics on the shoots some people did some stupid things and suffered for it. It's really unfortunate that now those officers have to carry those memories.

My comment was more on my opinion that departments nationwide need to tighten up hiring practices. This I believe needs to continually be followed up with comprehensive training. In the last decade maybe a little less some are just a little too prone to use deadly force.

Everybody loses

OMG I so love this guy!! I worked in the News Industry for a few years and got recruited as a PIO... I didn't last long at that position. I knew for a fact that 75% of the time I was handed complete BS and lies to report to the public. Almost daily someone from the department would ask me, "Where did you come up with that story?". Number 1 reply was, that is what they told me to say. I was making great money, but I could not sell out my ethics or integrity.

Exactly! And the news also gives there take on the story as well, only thing you can really trust is what you hear on the air! Example I was traveling a few months ago and was listening to the city I was in ( everything was unencrypted and the city is a lot bigger than Phoenix!!! Just saying!). I heard a call and listened to it entirely, the next morning I saw the news and they reported an officer was injured but expected to make it, from that you would think he was shot or something, when in fact he pinched his finger in the door of a car!
