I've had this freq marked as "Unknown" for a long time but have started paying attention the past couple of days to try for an ID. A couple of months ago I heard the Morse identifier DOD FMEADE transmitted on the freq but nothing else. Now I'm hearing what appears to be transmissions from more than one location - separate nets operating on the freq.

There is a very loud encrypted signal. It's the same type encryption used by the NSA Police and more than likely originates on Fort Meade property considering the identifier I mentioned above. There is someone else using the same type encryption but is very weak from my location. The loud ones and the weak ones don't operate together. They are two different nets.

Then there is plain voice on the freq from a couple of locations. One is so weak I can't make out the conversations. The other is a little better and seems to contain military office support functions - like a conversation today about which furniture the general wanted in his office. I also caught a reference at a different time today mentioning "APG" which could stand for Aberdeen Proving Ground - or almost anything. There was also a mention of going up to the eighth floor.

Does anyone have anything to add?

[Edit 12/09] I just heard the Morse identifier DOD FMEADE on 417.6.

The 417.6 mHz freq I mentioned above is from Fort Meade. They broadcast the Morse identifier DOD FMEADE. I had never heard anything other than that identifier over the past few months but now they have started using the freq extensively the past few days. The traffic is clear voice, has a PL tone of 82.5 and seems to consist mostly of site/building engineers tweaking various systems. I almost want to believe this traffic is from NSA based on bits and pieces from the system traffic but am amazed it's in the clear if it's from there. Of course, there are a lot of other government institutions on Fort Meade that have grown up in the past few years other than the military/intelligence community.

There are two other military/government systems I've been trying to ID for over a year without significant results.

One is on 408.1375 and consists of transportation type talk - bus/train departures from various platforms, etc. and seems to be from the D.C. or Northern Virginia areas.

The other is 406.2875 and consists of a lot of radio check-ins from a control point to outlying units. There are a lot of units on the net but I haven't caught enough info other than the radio checks to even start to identify it. This traffic is fairly loud and clear and I doubt it would be as far away from me as D.C. We can probably rule out the Aberdeen/Edgewood area since they have their own nets there. The signal strength is consistent with signals within about 10-15 miles but I realize that's just a wild-ass guess.

Does anyone else listen to this type stuff and have anything to add or contribute?
