So I have to manually input the frequency instead of a zip code ? I don't know how to do that.

Several frequencies to be exact. They operate on a trunked radio system. Use Sentinel to facilitate this, much much easier than programming trunked systems by hand. Full database scanning (zip code) doesn't allow you to customize systems, departments, talkgroups, etc like programming items into a favorites list does. Also note your law enforcement is fully encrypted and cannot be monitored (Mode "DE")

I'm trying to monitor manchester twp in ocean county,nj. They state the Icall or private function has to be used. I put the freq in on the faves list and where the tg ID goes I put *0 to make a wildcard.

Not sure if that's a typo but it would not be *0 (asterisk 0)

From the I Call wiki page @doctordialtone posted,

  • For the XT, P2, BCx36HP and SDS100/200 radios, the I-Call is automatic in ID Search (as is all patch TGID's), in ID Scan you need to program the wildcard "i0" or ".0" (i000000 Motorola / i0000 EDACS) for decimal display, or "." for HEX display. The 700000 number is no longer used, but is displayed as the radio ID, as seen in a trunked decoder program. Many of the third party software packages will do this for you by setting the I-Call flag.

Who are "they"? With trunked radio systems you monitor talkgroup IDs (click the trunked radio systems wiki link i provided in post #5 if you're unfamiliar with how trunked radio works) to hear traffic on the system. I've never seen an agency operate exclusively via private call. And as I touched upon in that same post you'll only be able to monitor mode "D" talkgroups on the system as mode "DE" are fully encrypted

Radio Reference states they use the icall or private call function
Right, but you stated they said it "has to be used", which is not the case.

They state the Icall or private function has to be used.

Radio Reference Database Says: The Private Call function is being used. If you have a Uniden scanner, program .00000 (will show as 700000 on the display) into the bank you have the Manchester TRS programmed in and turn on the Private Call/I-Call feature.

If you just want to listen to the system, you do not need to bother with any of that at all. If you want to listen to the system, as well as any private calls between subscribers, then follow the advice above in posts 13 and 8..

Ensure all service types are turned on for the talkgroups you want to hear (reference "tag" column per talkgroup table in RRDB). Although simulcast distortion may be a factor inhibiting your scanning efforts if you're seeing solid bars of signal but picking up little to no traffic & are within listening range to both towers on the system. But again as I mentioned in post #5 & post #9, only the mode "D" talkgroups are receivable. So listen next time you know there's a fire or an EMS event in town
