When I worked 911 in NY - I would get "pings" from a buddy of mine who worked 911 in central MA.

Location location location.

Our sites were located at very good elevations and could hear (and sometimes talk to) just about everyone in the state. I use to do radio checks at night with remote counties to see how far I could reach.

On midnights, several county 911 centers would do county to county radio checks hourly or at prescribed times. One of those holdovers from a different time.

In 1978 or thereabout there was a really bad snow storm in the Buffalo area (I think 12 to15 feet). I remember 60 control KED281 calling Buffalo to co-ordinate sending some 4 wheel drive apparatus up there. I can't remember where the 45.88 transmitter was located at that time, but possibly on the old county tower or Mountain lakes in N. Salem.
