A new HAM bought a couple HF rigs and I went over today and brought portable antenna to check them out and help her get acquainted with what she picked up. She got a Yaesue 450d and a TenTec Jupiter, she thought he told her the Icom worked good and the TenTec wouldn't transmit (he was older I think he was confused) we setup the Icom to look things over and it has no power coming to the antenna hookup, so we set that aside and setup the TenTec. That one looked good, had power on my meter n stuff but now I have questions!

1. What would cause the 450d to stop transmitting? Talked to a member of my club that has one that did the same thing, just out of nowhere it had no power. He did give us a guy to send it to for repairs tho!
2. The Jupiter has a (manual) but it dont seem to be very helpful as far as details of what controls do what and what not. Anyone able to give me layman's terms of how to operate the beast?
Thanks for any input you can give

I don't know that you have provided enough information for anyone to make a educated guess.

You mentioned a Yaesu and a Ten Tec. Where did the Icom come from? Or is that a mistype?

What is your test setup? You should be testing with a dummy load, not an antenna. If you do not have one, borrow one from a friend or local club. A good reason to use a dummy load is that, your test antenna could have a mismatch that is causing you radio to shut down, due to high SWR. You need to test with known good setup. A good Power/SWR meter would be a good test accessory.

What mode are you testing with? You should be using CW, AM, or FM. With SSB, there will be no output power, unless you are talking into the microphone.

A friend of mine has a Ten Tec Jupiter, but I don't know much about it. It always seemed like a good radio. You should have the instruction manual. I know it's available in PDF format over the internet. Same with the Yaesu. Go slowly through the manual. It really does tell you everything you need to know. My main radios consist of a Icom IC-735 and several older Heathkits.

Yes the Icom was mistyped. Yes I dropped the power down to 15 and first noticed the meter on the radio wasn't moving went and got my tuner out of my portable setup in my van since it has a cross needle meter and confirmed there was indeed no power out. Followed the manual and did a full reset so I knew were I was starting from not knowing what the former owner had set things to tested again still no move on the cross needle meter. Grabbed the TenTec and started same process, Power yes ok, now started going through the manual to try to understand the settings.

For the 450D, check that is in SSD and not Data. Data mode disables the microphone.

Ok she was mistaken. The TenTec jupiter was the working one the yaesu he said the finals gave out... now to find a tuner for the Jupiter till she can afford to send the 450 in
