New to this hobby

Hi im new to this. I was just wondering how far someone can hear or pick up a digital system. I am thinking of purchasing a digital scanner, just dont know on what one to go with. I pretty much have my mind set on the pro96. From where i live there is a digital system about 50 miles away. The other system i want to monitor is opp. Police in my area are provoice Edacs, in the 800mgz, fire in my area also are on the system but they are anolog. So im wondering what to do since i use to be able to listen to them all at one time.

It depends on where you are, if you are near other transmitters, what antenna you have.

When I am mobile I have problems snagging digital signals from more than 10-20 KM's.

When I used to live in hamilton I snagged towers in Mississauga, T.O., Grimsby, Guelph but I was 17 floors up facing Toronto.

There are numerous peoples on here and on Yahoo from your area that can give u the 411 but in my experience with portables and regular antennas the coverage isnt that great.

A Pro96 would work well for you in Chatham (I lived there for a few years myself). You would be able to monitor all the OPP activity in the area, plus the analog traffic on the EDACS system. You are correct that the PD are using ProVoice... The only way you would be able to listen to them again would be to buy a portable (LPE-200, Jaguar etc) and have it programmed. Very expensive route to take, but it works.

Hi people thanks for the reply. I just ordered a pro 96 a few days ago from the states. This question is to forts since hes in my area, would i be able to receive Windsor or London from my area. This should be an interesting device when it arrives, if it arrives i just hope it dont get held up at border. Im going to need some advise setting this up, since i never had a trunk tracking scanner before.

Its like Christmas in July or should i say June!

Well the new scanner arrived. Radioshack was very friendly and fast delivery. Hats off to them. Just hoping Uniden will be the same way when i buy my provoice mobile base scanner which is hopefully soon around the corner. Maybe by then ill have some more money saved up. Now to just figure out this one. I should have lots of fun trying to play with my brand new toy. Any help would be appreciated, since im new to this whole thing.
