that just makes me sick that a crappy a$$ cab company has MDT dispatching and where I work I'm stuck networking on Windows 95  and I get yelled at for asking when we are going to at least Win NT!

No this is not a joke either! Its a sad fact

If you're a cab company, you might as well use voice comms. I mean come on... your gonna need to know where to go to pick up your fare, and I would think MDT dispatching in a vehicle which i'm assuming has one driver, would create a traffic hazzard. What does everyone else think?

Why would it creats a traffic hazard? When a unit gets dispatched, the MDT gives a beep or some other sound to alert the driver they are needed. Most are smart enough to pull over to see what the message is.

Actually its a pretty smart move. The Taxi business is highly competitive.
Most cab companies monitor each others comms for a chance to get to a fare first. So if one is using MDTs the chances of a rival company arriving at the fare before the one being dispatched is eliminated.

thats good thinking radioscan :) . Also, isnt monitoring the others' frequencies illigal. I know it is if your listening with a scanner. It's called listening for personal gain, or something like that.

No, it is not illegal to listen. If it were, that would make anyone with a scanner illegal to listen in.

Using information that was monitored for gain or profit would be a violation of The Communications Act of 1934 and thus be illegal.

Proving such information was monitored and used for profit would be
extremely difficult, that is why other taxi companies can get by with it.
