Hi everybody,

I recently plugged an old scanner in that I hadn't listened to in awhile, and in its' programming is the old Petersburg ch 7/ TECAP freq of 453.800. While there's no voice traffic heard there anymore (suprise right?), I do however copy some short bursts of data.

Anyone with any knowledge of what agency/entity/spirit/persons are using this freq. and what the data bursts are? I confess ignorance in this matter...

Cheers,
B A

Any chance it's some sort of GPS bug? I remember that Henrico SAF used to have audible alarms on 156.21. I was told that they indicated suspects on the move.

That is Henrico County's new GPS toy. With various transmitter/receive remote sites around the county the "biggies" back at GHQ can track county employees and see if somebody was supposed to be working at a particular location when in fact he or she was actually taking a break at McDonald's or somewhere he or she shouldn't be. I recommend the next step from that which would be to install webcams in each vehicle and via cell internet access let GHQ ride along and spot check and see what you see. As you might expect the employees love this new technology that tracks their whereabouts.

One ham operator cross country trucker has been doing this for over a year via his website. He links the APRS website to his website and has his webcam mounted below the rear view mirror. The video refreshes every 20 seconds. As he passed through the Petersburg area last summer I was able to watch his progress on the APRS site map via his 1 minute packet databursts and also video via his webcam. The color resolution was so good I easily read the "Quantico" exit sign on I95 as he moved rapidly north into NOVA and Maryland. Good or bad his wife no longer has to ask where he is. She needs only to go to his website and look.

I take it, then, that the tri-cities folks have abandoned 453.800 in favor of their newer toys?

453.8000 mhz.-more

Petersburg was the only area PD who used it and then for drug surveillance only. I haven't heard any activiity in years but Petersburg is still licensed for it. Now that they have their P25 trs it probably is continuing to gather dust. Westmoreland Co. VFD also the capability to use it for simulcasting their 45.2800 mhz. comms.
