We've noticed a huge increase in rants and negative posts that revolve around agencies going to encryption due to the broadcasting of scanner audio on the internet. 2 weeks ago over the weekend. Something different happened on 460.025 and 154.740 for TN.

I was hearing tones on them that ara on 33.80. But now they arent anymore. Anyone know why that was. And could any one ask TN if they could have 460.025 be repeat of 33.80 and 33.44 . I mean 460.5375 from pumpkin hill in Ashford does 33.80 and 33.44 . there should be one in the tolland Vernon and South Windsor Area. imean we have vhf for tones 152.0075 but should be a freq that does tones and talk back just like 460.5375. Cant get that in Vernon and South Windsor.

460.025 and 154.7400 are repeater frequencies off the Tolland Fire Department's repeater located and the newly constructed WFSB tower on the very top of Bald Hill road in Tolland. The radio is up and running but is not officially online for emergency use. It is a tremendous site better than the current site TN operates. The repeater is a combination of a Daniels Lowband and VHF radio and a Tait UHF repeater. The system is a multichannel lowband radio programmed with 33.44, 33.78, 33.88, 33.84, 33.86, 33.80 and 33.90. The low band radio can be set to any of these channels. It also repeats on 154.7400 and 460.025 what ever the low band recieves. That period of time you reference the repeater was set to 33.80. The purpose was to assist in the investigaiton of a 33.44 low band problem we have been having in TN. The radio installers were attempting to see if this tower was causing the problems on 33.44. While it was set to 33.80 the problem still remained on 33.44 and there were no problems detected with 33.80.

The reason you do not see any sites other than pumpkin hill repeating on UHF or VHF is that there is no real need. TN has never officially "bought in" to VHF paging of any type be it tone and voice or alpha paging. The purchased a VHF radio and strapped it to 33.80 as a test when QV started utilizing 152.0075. TN's official position to the departments was to not invest in this system. As it turned out several departments went ahead and purchased VHF tone and voice pagers. Since there was no frequency repeating 33.44 at the time no one purchased two channel pagers. However when Tolland Fire went to VHF tone and voice they did want the second channel on 33.44 and just happened to have the old Tolland Police frequency licensed and a radio they could strap to 33.44. This is how the 154.7400 radio came to light and was originally installed at the TN bald hill site. With the construction of the new WFSB sit just up the hill from the TN site Tolland Fire has built an incredible system and now that frequency performs even better. You should be able to hear 154.7400 loud an clear in Vernon South Windsor. Heck I heard it in Bethel the other day on a nice high spot in town! I was able to hear 460.025 all the way to Waterbury on 84.

So as it stands now you should be able to listen to 33.80 and 33.44 on a VHF radio. Hope this addresses your question.

I can do one better -- I've heard 154.74 as far west as Torrington on a portable scanner with the standard rubber ducky antenna inside a house!

I think it has to do with elevation and surroundings, as I was quite high up and it came in quite clear. Here at home (Vernon) it does not come in as well, but I am near a lot of trees and hills. With a homemade 2m J-pole it comes in a little better. So, if you are having problems picking them up, I suggest investing in a new antenna.. who knows.. maybe you'll be able to hear the lowband too.

This repeater is temporarily on 33.84 with a PL of 179.9. TN is testing to see how much traffic we hear from the Pequots. There is a huge debate going on right not with what PL to use when TN implements 33.84. If we keep 179.9 which is the covention for low band east of the river we will most likely hear the tribe. If we put in a different PL it will help minimize the traffic we hear. The other issue is some of the multichannel low band radios are not configured for multiple PL tones. The repeater should be back on 33.44 early next week.

Hope this clears things up.
