Heard this today (24th, about 1:20AM; Fresno area) on 464.8125.

One station called another 3 or 4 times with no contact then another station broke in and said in effect, "He probably cant hear ya, all he has for the channel is a handheld when he's up in the air."

Whereupon, the first station came back and said they'd talk to him when he got back to the airstrip.

Judging from near full scale strength, it had to be a repeater. Also has annoying "pop" about every 2 seconds.

Checked the RR freq. list & couldn't find anything that seemed to match what I heard. Any ideas on who it is & where?

Doubt it's a repeater - I think that's a simplex channel and a aircraft to repeater should work pretty well even with a handheld.

Probably a couple nearby base or mobile units. Most non public-safety ops that spring to mind are those that I doubt operate much at night (crop-dusting, pipeline/tower patrol, etc.) What small airstrips are nearby?

Chandler (5 or so miles West of me), and Fresno-Yosemite International (Which is the largest airport in this area; 5 or 6 miles East), but don't think either has 'dusters based there. Anyone know if they do?

Crop dusting is frequently done at night. The air less turbulant so the application goes where the pilot puts it.
