Time of day would help. Then we might find out why it was weak. I hear NY/Gander volmet on 6604kHz most evenings here - say 0900z - which is just a bit further away from the east coast than you are! Something might be wrong with your antenna - I'm just using a 60ft wire into a 9:1 transformer and a JRC NRD 515.

These are part of the MWARA networks - 5550 is part of the CAR-A family, 5649 is a member of the NAT-C family, and 5598 part of the NAT-A family.

There have been a series of solar disturbances (a couple of M class flares and solar wind) which have really stirred up the ionosphere. The flux, A and K index as I write this is 143, 5, 4 - and the K index that high indicates highly disturbed conditions. In addition, Spaceweather reports a X class flare at 2323 yesterday with a possible CME headed our way. Welcome to Cycle 24.

It's always worth checking the antenna and feedline if things don't sound like they're coming in as strong as you think they should, but there can be other factors too best regards..Mike

5.550 has been really variable - sometimes booming in, other times silent, in the past few weeks. I tend to hear it late afternoon / early evening, when it is receiveable.

It's pretty much an adopted standard to use UTC when reporting, and it's one we should also try to follow. Keep in mind that this is a world wide forum, so using a single time standard is important. It's also the 'standard' on most every HF mailing list I see.

If you don't understand how to use UTC, here's a decent article on the subject

UTC GMT Conversion

best regards..Mike

But your 10:21 PM shows as 9:21 PM to me, different time zones and all. At least it does on this computer, one of the few in the house set to local time, most of my other computers, especially when radio related, at home are set to UTC. Also, some people post as they hear things, some post after they hear things, so the posting time may not have anything to do with the time the signal was actually heard. The near universal convention for reporting a signal (as KA3JJZ has written) is to use UTC time and date, not local time and date, and to include the time of the intercept in the report just as you include frequency and mode.

I am sorry I forgot to put in the UTC time with my post., I do not use UTC time very much and I forgot on this forum I should have done so, I will in the future make sure I include UTC time in all my posts, it's not something as I said I use every day of my life so I forgot to add the UTC Time to the post.

Some aircraft had problems last night on NAT-A hearing Santa Maria on 5598, and some with New York, so some had to switch to secondary (3016 Khz).

HF has been very unpredictable since last week, I have been checking WM7D dot Net for the lastest info.
