been listening in the early morning hours to a numbers station on 5.800 Mhz with computer generated 5 letter code groups in CW

it's really strong and really wide...quite impressive. something about it makes it stand out from all the others, i can't quite put my finger on it. maybe the sound of the CW characters, clean crisp with perfect spacing...maybe the really wide -but clean- signal of the station...i dunno, but it somehow stands out to me....

always love a Numbers station....hummmmm, can we still call it a Numbers station if it sends Letters ? :)

enjoy the magic.

If I recall correctly, these are still numbers being sent. The MCW stations operated by the Cubans use "cut numbers" which are numbers represented by letters in order to shorten the length of the CW message.

Can you make a recording? I've always wanted to listen to these numbers stations but I've never wanted to buy a shortwave receiver.

can't remember the link offhand, but there are a bunch of sites online that have recordings....google it...there is one site that is a virtual goldmine of clips...

in fact look for a news story the BBC did a few years ago on spy/numbers stations...it had great audio from all sorts of spy stations...

sorry i have no way to transfer what i hear for you...

PS: get the shortwave receiver ! you'll never regret it, in fact you'll kick yourself for waiting so long ! you can get your feet wet with used radios at hamfests for $20 or even a cheap import pocket radio......check pawn shops and yardsales too for those old am/fm/sw all band radios ! it's MAGIC !!!

Hi, I refer to her in my loggings as the Cuban Numbers Lady :). Over last summer, she'd broadcast at 3 AM E.S.T. every single night, beginning precisely at the time Radio Havana Cuba signed off. I was logging her numbers broadcasts at 5883 kHz. And yes the signal is strong & wide. She also did/does a simulcast on another frequency in the 6 MHz band. (I'm not looking at my log sheets right now).

I do know that, a couple years back, 4 or 5 Cuban 'spies' were arrested (in Tennessee, I think) and that their portable radios were supposedly tuned to that frequency.

There are some videos on youtube of the Cuban Numbers Lady, which from what I can tell is called v2 or v2a along with some other variants. Search "V2 numbers station" on youtube.

I might be putting up some crappy videos of a numbers station I heard a few weeks ago as well if they don't seem too redundant.

No...please read the original logging/post again.

This is CW...morse code...5 full Letter Groups....not the CubanNumbersLady....no voice just CW.... not numbers...letters. (like V2=voice and M8=morse)

thanks

Oops! Sorry. I do have a morse code 5-set numbers logged for 5898 kHz, on June 26 2008 (on my Kenwood R-1000). I wrote in my log that it was Cuban "v2", although I can't readily recall where I got that information.

I have extensive loggings, also, of foreign language 2-way transmissions that are not on FCC allocated frequencies. I still find these odd 2-way Txs today, mostly in USB mode but sometimes LSB, although I really can't understand what they're saying.

It was just this past Tuesday evening or maybe Wednesday morning if it was 12am or after, when I heard one of these Cuban Lady stations. It was on 5.???? I could kick myself for not knowing what I was listening to and for not taking the note of the freq.

I tuned in for quite a bit but just got bored and turned the radio off.

I have found tons of sites dedicated to these numbers stations and have read most of the Wiki pages at Wikipedia on these stations. Truly genious the way they operate!

Right as I type, there is a numbers station on 5.800.00 AM sending CW in the same pattern over and over ad nauseum. Ended in Dih dah dih dah dih (If I copied correctly) followed by a couple more very quick dihs and dats. It's gone as I end this post, but was on another 5.xxx.xx freq just a bit earlier, also legible on USB.

5.800 Mhz 0600z s/on - 0634z s/off 16 Oct 08

caught the whole broadcast tonight.....no announcements at sign on, just straight into the CW letter groups....

this one really intrigues me.....it is PERFECT computer generated/code practice session quality morse and slightly higher than usual speed for typical numbers stns....but it is so CLEAN and CRISP....beautiful....and the perfect use of PROSIGNS, almost in international traffic format.....break-BT-//-dadidididah;end-AR-didadidadit....

message started off with repeated: RIGAA RIGAA RIGAA
then the long transmission of 5 letter groups.
'break' BT prosign sent repeatedly after first section edded: // // //
there was a pause between the two main sections, as if two messages.
the second section started with the repeated: RIGAA RIGAA RIGAA
the end of the final section was with the 'end' AR prosign repeated: AR AR AR

the AR 'end' prosign at the end of the broadast was what you heard KC9NCF. you copied it correctly.....

the other thing is that this transmitter and transmission sounds WAY too good for typical Cuban quality....or lack thereof....it's better than anything RHC operates ! and the power mains are clean supplying it, too.....a usual cuban giveaway.

sounds good enough to be from Warrenton or AP Hill sites ;-)

I believe this to be an M8 variant (Cuban morse numbers station) sending computer generated cut number groups. 5800 KHz has been used by V2/M8 numbers stations for years. The RIGAA (or 67811), repeated several times, may be a "callup" indicating who (or what) the message is for. I have heard several different formats used in M8 transmissions over the years. Of course, V2/M8 signals are usually very strong here in West Central Florida.

yeah, it's a classic M8 transmission.....

it's just that the transmission quality is so damn good, i wonder if Chavez has given them some new transmitters ?

thanks all...

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread. Barefootdipole, seeing as you and I are in the same area... would I be able to catch this numbers station with a simple indoor antenna?

Numbers stations have always fascinated me, but I was never able to catch anything when I lived on the West coast. Now that I'm on the East coast I may have a chance :)

schweizerkiser, I live in South carolina and you will have no problems picking up Cuban numbers and morse at all off the whip. They usually start at 1am EDT on 5900khz or 5800khz when Radio Habana Cuba shuts down one or more of their broadcast transmitters....
