• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Speaking of CB radio, when I think about the imbeciles that work at Ratshack & their ignorance of the hobby I must admit that it is only a sign of the times but I once remember a time in the 60's when the elitist at Barry Electronics on Canal Street in lower Manhattan would cater to the 3 piece suit crowd & leave the rest of us hobbiest standing in the doorway but the worst case of lying was when a friend & I bought 2 CB walkie talkies from Grand Central Radio located a block from GCT & when I asked him how far we could communicate with each other & he said "5 MILE CLEAR", of course when my friend & I tried talking to each other outside the store the maximum distance was 1/2 block, lo & behold when we returned wanting a refund he told us that they cannot by law take back FCC licensed CB radios, "5 MILE CLEAR" go figure.

In this hobby you have to do your homework before you give up the $ :)

That was one amazing sentence.

I figure that "5 MILE CLEAR" means five miles of range if the terrain is flat and 'clear' of any obstructions. That would make it the 'truth', but there are conditions to it. I also figure your findings about range at that frequency, power level, and antenna(s) is about 'dead-nutz' normal.

CB portables have always been overrated as a sales gimmick, the GCR guy told the "truth" as they are advertized. Hey, we all know product advertizing is BS lies and deception... right? Experience tells me you got the range I would expect from a couple of 5W portables, Manhattan blocks are L-O-N-G and unobstructed and line of sight IS line of sight regardless.

Barry? Words just fail me but I liked to drool on the Collins consignment gear on display on the left before stumbling up the block stepping over piles of mil surplus radio gear all over the sidewalks of that famous Radio Row. Those were the... dAAAAAAAYS! (Thank you Edith and Archie.)
