$500 PaperWeight PLZ HELP 396xt Sac,CA

Hey there guys have not been around this board for a awhile Got myself a shinny new 396xt yesterday. I had no idea how hard it was going to be to program. The dynamic memory thing is a whole other ballgame. Been working at it for about 6 hours straight and still not having much luck

Using Proscan and I have serial to usb got it all connected up and the firmware updated

What im trying to do is program my scanner to listen to Sac sheriff north base Dispatch

Im i totally off base here just need a lil help in the right direction im a push buttons tell i figure it out not a read the manaul kind of person but i spent two hours taking notes in the manual and im still lost Sorry for the typos worn smooth and this point

Any help would be awesome

If your in Sacramento i will pay you for your time to come help me really would like to get scanner up and running

Should put the frequencies into the site you created.

Then create a channel group (not site) North Dispatch and save the TGIDs (Channels) you want to hear in that.

Freescan is so much easier.

You only need to enter the 4 control channel freq for each site (city) (county) 2 in blue and 2 in red for each site, also set scanner to control channel only. And yes free scan is easy

I have a 396xt and listen to it every day with no problems, I have SRRCS programed with just the 4 freq for each site (city) 853.7125,853.7750,853.9000,853.9625 and (county) 853.8500,853.8750,853.6875,853.8000 in this order. And for Los Rios (digital) setting of 3/100

If you're using FreeScan send me an email at the address in my signature and I'll send you a copy of the file that's programmed in my 396 just so you can take a look at where things go. I'm in North Carolina so the file wouldn't be good for you to use there but it will give you the chance to look at things.

I just created a quick file for Sacramento with Sheriff, Metro Fire and Sac City pd to hopefully get you started. Unzip the file and use Freescann software to load it into your Scanner.

You're a premium subscriber and you have Proscan - you should be downloading the Sac County system from RadioReference directly with Proscan. It's ridiculously easy - that should be your starting point for learning the radio. Being new to DMA and trying to program by hand is why it seems to be a paperweight! It's much easier to learn how to work the radio by downloading and getting a working system, and then as you understand how things work, programming it manually will make more sense whether in the software or on the keypad.

Once you get it loaded, make sure the city and county sites have quick keys assigned (SQKs), and that the groups of talkgroups also have group quick keys (GQKs) assigned and learn how to turn the sites and groups on and off. That, to me, is the core of learning how to operate it. Understanding systems, sites, groups and quick keys is essential to start with.

Sidenote: this is a rebanded system, so you either have to use the software to download the system and automagically set it up for you, or you will probably have to do some setting in Proscan to tell it that.
