I'm at Virgina International Raceway this weekend and have come across a control channel I've never noticed before in this area.

My 396XT locks onto 859.0375 as a control channel but it won't show a sysid. But Unitrunker shows 5B1F, type I 800, 128.57 connect tone and no other channels.

FCC DB search for VA and NC doesn't show anything would match.

Years ago this was licensed to Nextel Richmond as WPQD657 for business users. This assignment no longer is valid. Unless it is a very low power trs such as the Richmond AP or antennas phased such as Hanover Co. I receive most Richmond area 800 mhz. trs quite well. I have spot checked for the past week and not heard any activity on this frequency.

A check of Maryland also shows this frequency is not licensed to anyone in state.

However my further research shows this to be a popular trs frequency used in the midwest and west but rarely assigned in the eastern US. There is one possible suspect.

I think you heard one of KNJA391 5 channel trs repeaters licensed to the Washington, District of Columbia. Possibly a favorable temporary temperature inversion weather condition permitted reception as 1,000 watts ERP is authorized for each of the 5 channels repeaters. The repeaters are listed as "FB2" which usually indicates a standalone repeater operation but it is a trs.. 850 units are licensed to use it.

It most definitely was not this. I was at VIR aka Alton, VA in a valley next to the Dan River, not at home in Loudoun. 859.0375 is voice channel for the DC public safety system (5 sites, 15 channels) which I can just barely receive at home on CC 856.1875. I see only 100 watts for KNJA391.

There were no favorable conditions, especially not good enough for 200 miles range on 800mhz. There was little I could receive there other than some county stuff and a couple NC TRS sites. I couldn't even receive a STARS site. I had a Ratshack 800mhz laying on the roof of my 6x14 enclose trailer and a Ratshack amp connected.
