Very possible you heard well known Cuban ham and radio personality Arnie Coro CO2KK with his DXers Unlimited program.

The last photo I've seen of his shack - and this was a number of years ago, I don't know if it's still true - he has a ton of Heathkit equipment. Talk about bringing back memories....73 Mike

Yup, Professor Arnaldo "Arnie" Coro CO2KK is world renown for his achievements, among those being the elimination of the once famous "Cuban Chirp". Once upon a time you could always tell a Cuban by his unstable CW signal. He and a few others revolutionized (pardon the pun) Amateur Radio in Cuba, they made those old boat anchors sing.

I've had several HF QSOs with him and many pleasant e-mail exchanges, he's one heck of a guy. My one and only frustration was hearing him call CQ on 6M and the band crapped out during my return, he was gone. The owner of that HF station I mentioned visited him in Habana some years ago, he loved the place and came back with half a ton of photographs. Unfortunately since 9-11 Canada has become a pain in the butt over passports and put a stop to it. It works both ways, the last time Arnie and some friends tried to have a tour presentation in the US they were turned back, very disappointing for a lot of US hams looking forward to meeting them. I like Canada but in this regard you stink!

I understand that the Winterfest committee has tried several times - even to the point of taking up a mini collection to help defray his expenses - to get Arnie over here, but the State Department thinks with what they sit on, instead of what is between their ears. As if Arnie would be a terrorist....very annoying. I understand he's a heckuva nice guy to talk to. A shame I haven't gotten the chance.

I recently tuned in on 6000 on my 746pro, with a 40 meter vertical (33ft tall with 60 or so radials) and R Havana was 60 db over 9! Not kidding, I did have preamp 1 switched in though, but one of the strongest signals I've seen on the radio. I can listen to them on my VX-6 handheld with only the VHF rubber duck easily. It reminds me of the good old days of Radio Moscow and the old time propaganda machine.

I have to turn my preamp off and my attenuator on, and then I have to crank the RF Gain to the 20db level just to hear them correctly. Their signal is very overpowering here on the Mississippi gulf coast. For most stations including ham radio stations I usually leave the preamp on, the ATT off, and the RF gain set to just a tad bit above the noise level. But Radio Havana is way too over-driving. It overloads my receiver.

I'm using a Kenwood TS2000 with a 40 meter wire dipole at about 15 feet above ground.

Truly an interesting video, so much so I downloaded and archived it. That's a rare glimpse at Arnie even mentioning politics, Cuban hams consider it a forbidden topic and he avoids even the slightest hint of it in e-mail. I never did understand what the US government has against Castro beginning with Eisenhower, except for Khrushchev's little game of brinkmanship with Kennedy Cuba is quite harmless and could be an asset if Washington could only see the potential.

For those who know history and aren't blinded by propaganda we know Che Guevara was the threat and he's long since dead. Oh well, like Bruce Willis some notions Die Hard. Oh for what it's worth those old 50s cars Arnie mentioned aren't the only ones, check this out. Before you ask, those classics mostly are owned by car club members and come out in force for some of the most spectacular rallies you'd ever see where they drive caravan style all around the island with people lining the streets to watch them go by.

I met Arnie (CO2KK) in Varadero while I was on holidays a few years back. The next time I visit Cuba I plan to tour the Radio Havana studios. When I go to Cuba they always welcome me back at Customs.Back in the 60`s I was just a SWL and often listened to Radio Havana Cuba.Fidel Castro even sent me a Christmas card.I wish I still had it but over the years it got lost. The hurricanes this past season have taken a lot of the Cuban hams off the air.I enjoy talking to them when possible.I have worked many of them and passed emails with them.

I've never understood that either. I've been to Havana, interesting place.

Had a great lunch at an outdoor BBQ chicken place, listened to a good 5 piece band, and bought their CD.
They didn't seem *too* opressed. :)

I'm surprised U.S. Hams are allowed to work Cuba.
