There is not much activity in my area (NYC/NJ Metro area) except for a couple of repeaters that are part of linked systems.

If you park your 6M FM receiver on 52.525 24/7/365 you'll eventually hear something during a band opening. They are usually brief and few and far between. Be prepared to listen certainly for many weeks, likely many months.

There are a couple of 6m repeaters in my area. There's a weekly roundtable net on one of them each Thursday evening. Unfortunately, I don't have any good antennas for 6m at home.

Yes, occasionally on a local 6-Meter repeater in my area - 53.31000:

Don't think I ever heard anyone on the national FM simplex call: 52.525.

Back in the day I had a shiny new FT-857 and someone gave me an old 6m antenna. I slapped it up and made a call on 52.525 and got nothing. I went over to 50.125 USB and low and behold there was an entire group in Jacksonville FL using it. We also had a repeater on 53.020 that was linked to 10m, 2m, 220 and 440.

I have since moved to Colorado Springs and the listing says we have a 6m repeater up on a mountain, but I do not have my 6m station established yet.

I have the W4FOT machine in the memory, but no joy.
Can you key the 53.13 up? I can hear it from my residence but I don't have the 6m antenna on the FJ anymore. I used to make a few contacts on the 53.41 Caesars Head, but it's been off the air for more than a year. Not much 6m FM repeater activity in upstate SC lately.

My wife and I use 52.525 for our local talk-around.

And yeah, I know the moderate controversy of using a calling freq for talk-around, but if people hear it and do not like it they can come up on freq and tell me so. By using it I am also monitoring it (it is not like my wife and I talk for hours on end, more often just short "I am 10 minutes out" kind of calls), so if someone wants to "call" on it, I will hear, and also I can tell easily when the band is open.

6 meters isn't exactly busting at the seams so hearing chatter on it seems like a good thing for the reason you mentioned - knowing that the band is active. Heck, I've monitored the 6M calling frequency for quite some time and heard nothing. It would have been nice to hear something. But hey, if I ever feel the need to get some useless complaining out of the way, I know where to go.;)
