If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Looking at getting a radio for my truck. Currently I have the 2180 for my FD so my thought was to get the 7180 so I could just dump the programming to it. Is there much difference between these 2 radios? Any advantage of one over the other?

7160 = Analog, no trunking. 128 channels. 8 character display.
7180 = Analog, MPT and LTR. Remote head option. 512 channels. 12 character display.

Personally, if I was in your shoes, I'd take the 7180, if the prices were compatible. The 7180 chassis is shared by a number of radios, the NX-700, 800, 900, 901, not to mention the TK-5720, 5820. This means that there are going to be more accessories out there. The display is a bonus, the dot matrix on the 7180 is a bit nicer to read than the segment display used on the 7160.

If the prices are close, I'd personally choose the 7180.

I didn't realize that only the 7180 had the remote head option. Thats one thing I want as I'm limited on space and dont want to hack anything up in my truck.

Yes, the remote head kit is the KRK-10.
When remote'd it put the majority of the radio out of the way. The control head itself is pretty small and can easily be tucked into much smaller areas. I use them on my work truck for an NX-700 and an NX-900, as well the NX-900 in my own truck. Since the control head has it's own speaker, you can just run off that, although I prefer to use external speakers on my remote installs. A larger remote speaker will give louder and more intelligible audio.
