Is there a way to turn AGC completely off? I don't care if it voids the warranty.

Yes. You can select "OFF" as the AGC Time Constant. Tap Function to bring up the Function screen. Tap AGC for one second to bring up the AGC selection screen (FAST, MID, or SLOW). Tap one of those to adjust the time constant for that AGC selection. See page 4-2 in the basic manual.
