7550 to nx5300

I have racked my brain all weekend long. I have read forum after forum, watched YouTube after YouTube and still cannot get anywhere. Here is my situation.

I have a Motorola 7550. I want to transfer to a kenwood nx5300. Both are dmr radios. Both are uhf radios. I have software for both, cables for both. Much to my surprise, the 7550 has 16 "zones" and only 2 frequencies. Not at all what I was expecting. Each zone is a different "channel" however, they are programmed as zones. I want to program them into 1 zone, 16 channels in my kenwood radio. Problem is, I have no idea how to do this. I have spent roughly 24 hours over the last 3 days reading forums and watching videos, but no one can say how to do this. Someone please help? I'll upload codeplug if necessary, screenshots if you don't have cps software. I really need an interpreter for the Motorola radio...lol.

Well if the XPR 7550 has 16 zones as "channels" but only utilize 2 frequencies then "channels" are separated from each other by other means. This can be done with the color code, timeslot and talkgroup ID (I assume the zones contain group contacts). Can you describe what is different and what is common among the 16 zones?

With the Kenwood 5300 you would create a single DMR system. In that system you would add 16 personalities and include the information that you gleen from each 7550 zone (frequency, color code, time slot and talkgroup ID) into each personality. When you have that then you would create a single zone in the Kenwood and add all 16 personalities you made into that zone. Your button and knob programming would dictate how each channel is accessed.

Be aware as the 7550 requires a group contact ID, the Kenwood does not. To make it compatible with Motorola you need to construct a group ID list first to be able to assign it in your DMR personality. Then Selcall On PTT needs to be entered in order for the Kenwood to transmit the talkgroup ID and selectively receive that ID only which is required by the Motorola.

Then I have channel pool, and that's where the 2 frequencies are. Channel 1 is color code 6 and channel 2 is color code 8.

I will start making the 16 personalities on kenwood. Where can I find the talk groups on Motorola and where do I put them on the kenwood?

Well, I set up the list in kenwood, though, not the way i had hoped or wanted, and can hear the Motorola just fine. Just not the other way. I tried to group the contacts together in separate lists, but when I set up the personality, it would only use list 1. So I had to make 1 big list then select the right 1 for that personality.

Well you've found out how to passively monitor the 2 frequencies and all the talkgroups. However this is not true trunking as it will not follow a conversation 100%. Using scan you can try to see where the traffic lands but the Kenwood will not do this automatically. But being what the system is I would think it was not heavily loaded and anything that that pops up will be the only thing to listen to and competition from another talkgroup would be only occasional.

No it won't. Trunking radios request a talkpath on transmit. The trunking system will return to you the proper repeater and slot along with your talkgroup ID information. Your radio will automatically switch to what information the system gives you. That will be your talkpath for that transmission only. It may be different on the next one. A static channel will not access a capacity plus system.

I have found that too. DMR personalities can only access contact member(s) from group list 1. No way to access 2 or beyond. Something is missing in KPG-D1N. I was going to bug Evans @kd4efm about it but just haven't gotten around to it yet.

If you have been able to create list 2+ (remember to partition the list in order to create the next list), then selecting is in the Personal Features of the personality, about 2/3 of the way down:

That's the other thing. Group ID List Number selects the ID of single list. It does not change the list itself. Poor wording.

I've been all over the map looking for that including Personal Features. I don't know why I missed the obvious. Maybe Havana Syndrome from standing in front of too many dishes. Anyway thank you for the lead.

All that to say this, I have successfully gotten my Kenwood nx5300S to transmit and receive a Motorola XPR7550.

I was going through the radio configuration settings in the 7550 and seen network ID. I put that number in the system personality group ID on the nx5300. Enabled single selcal (whatever that is) and viola. My Kenwood now communicates with the Motorolas at work. Now my coworkers are mad because it makes a beep noise when I let go of the mic button. But hey, baby steps, right.

Congrats! However that confirms you're not actually on a Capacity + system but most likely just conventional DMR.

I'd have to look in KPG-D1 but usually EOT tones in digital are on the receiving radio's end.

Only 2 are all calls, and ironically, are the 2 I can't get to work.
