780 LCD intermittent problem

780 less than one yr old.

Sometimes the LCD only 50% on and letters, etc only partially active.
When this occurs, no scanning, no audio, nothing.

Had the thing unplugged for a month. Still did it.

Then two days ago, the LCD starts working fine.

I'm shipping it to Uniden, but if it doesn't act up for them???

The Uniden repair techie was almost indifferent about the whole thing.

Any suggestions you all may have that I can write on my note w/ the scanner would be appreciated.

If you can explain it to them better then you did here then they should be able to fix it. When you said "Sometimes the LCD only 50% on and letters, etc only partially active" it really dont make much sense. What do you mean by LCD only 50% on and letters?

780 LCD problem

The intermittent problem on the LCD....

Roughly half of the letters or numbers light up
and of those, most do not do so fully. By that
I mean for instance, the letter "A" with only 1/2 of the
letter. Or...the number 8 with only the top 1/2 of the
8 appearing. The other half of the LCD doesn't come
on at all.

Since their is no audio or scanning occuring either, that tells
me that it is more than just an LCD problem. One person
has told me that a main processor (CPU) of the scanner
isn't functioning properly.

That makes more sense than just the LCD being the problem.
An LCD could fail and I should still have audio and scanning
taking place.

Any other suggestions would be welcomed.

From what you described, I think you'll end up with an internally new unit. Here's why.

The tech who gets this radio has two choices to correct your problem. He can:

1. Open the scanner up
2. Get out the meter and leads
3. Check each component for nominal voltage readings before and after it in the circuit.
4. Replace each component that doesn't meet the spec
5. Continue the trace until all components that fail have been repaired.
6. Load test freqs into memory and perform standard tests to ensure all is well
7. If it passes, close it up and ship it back to you. If not be ready for some overtime.
8. Call his wife up and say "Yes, I know it's 9PM. I'm on my way home now."

OR:
1. Open the scanner up
2. Toss the mainboard and replace with a new one
3. Load test freqs into memory and perform standard tests to ensure all is well
4. If it passes, close it up and ship it back to you. If not, toss it in "the pile" and ship you a new one.
5. Use the remainder of the day to repair more radios instead of wasting all day on yours. Or surf the web for a few while the boss ain't lookin'.... :wink:

So the scanner you get back will be either a new one in the old one's scanner suit, or a new one altogether. Either way, you can bet the problem will be gone when you get the radio back from Ft. Worth.

First rule: Check ALL connections in scanner. If that doesnt fix anything then ship it. Good Luck, Larry
