I have the 996T connected in my office and in general I am extremely happy with the features and the scanner in general.

I had to reprogram a 780xlt for use at the firehouse and I disconnected my 996 and connected the 780 to the same antenna feed.

Wow. From what I can tell it seems to be picking up remote signals better and clearer.

Is it me or has anyone else noticed this?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Yep, the receiver in the 996 is horrid. It reminds me of an Icom R-1. It's wide as hell and prone to all sorts of interference. Mine sits on probably 20 % of the Fed freqs I have programmed with a steady dead carrier. Nothing else in the shack acts that way on the same antenna.

It's too bad too. The features of the 996 coupled with the receiver of the 780 would have been awsome. However, the 996 seems to do very well at 800 and the 780 is pretty weak in that range.

As I sit here all I hear is deeeeedooooo deeeeedooooo from ancient POCSAG pager transmitters that should have been banned years ago. The 780 is happily playing the garble of an raw digital transmission but the 996 is playing hell to fight through the pagers.

They are on the same multicoupler.

For $500 it really pisses me off.

The 780 is better all around, and I think it is better on 800Mhz as well

Either I got a really bad 780 or a really good 996 because my experience has been the opposite. Then again, the hottest receiver I have right now is a 796, which is better than either.

I think the biggest problem here is the damned 158.100 pager that won't quit. The 996 shows its weakeness more than the others when it comes to rejecting signals like that.

BTW, I have searched hi and low for a license for that transmitter and I can't find it. I would really love to find out that it's running illegally.
