I just bought a 796D to replace one of my 785's. I really thought that the 796D was essentially the 78D with the upgrade for 9600baud control channels. I was a bit surprised to find that it is a bit more different than that.
First, the 796 seems to be significantly more sensitive than the 785. Maybe it's just my unit, but especially on VHF and UHF, it just seems to receive better.
The volume control/power switch has a much better feel, and the audio taper seems smoother than on either of my 785s.
The 796 display seems crisper and easier to read that the 785. I'm one of the few people that likes the 785 display better than the 780 display, and I like the 796 even more. Again, maybe it's within the normal tolerances for production, but I do like it.
One of the things that I like about the 785 and 796 display is that they don't disappear if you are wearing polarized sunglasses. The 780 display was only readable from certain angles when I had sunglasses on.
Anyone else have similar thoughts on the 796?
