I have two 796 scanners (one is online with ProScan so I can access it anyplace).
I had noticed that I was no longer picking up icalls.
After some research, I found several folks saying that firmware 3.29 has a problem with icalls, so I flashed back to 3.28. icalls are back.
But here is the interesting thing:
I was about to sell one of the units, due to poor 800Mhz performance. After flashing back to 3.28, IT WORKS GREAT!
Now I know that propagation and conditions have a lot to do with this, but there is no doubt that the firmware matters. My on line scanner uses an outside antenna that is not cut for 800Mhz, and I was not getting any reception at all on one distant system. flashed the firmware, and there it is! The other is using the RS 800Mhz duckie, and it is picking up that system like a champ!
So it appears that while 3.29 may be better for digital (which I really don't have any of!), for everything else 3.28 works better. And no, I can not explain how the firmware would affect reception like that, but it does. Really, on two separate radios!
