We've noticed a huge increase in rants and negative posts that revolve around agencies going to encryption due to the broadcasting of scanner audio on the internet. It's now worn out and continues to be the same recycled rants. These rants hijack the threads and derail the conversation. They no longer have a place anywhere on this forum other than in the designated threads in the Rants forum in the Tavern.

Hi all,

I bought the BC 796 new in August, 2005. Got to use it for a month until lightning fried it. I was wondering why it went away from the market so sudden? Was it not a desirable rig? I'm thinking of purchasing another APCO 25 scanner, any recommendations? Look for a used BC 796 or get a new BC 996 maybe? It will be a home (base) station. Thanks.

Hi Jeff-Uniden carries it on their website(online store) at $450.
That might be as good as ebay. I think the 700mhz feature, plus in deck mobile intstallation,of the BC996t, just outdated the model, as far as production is concerned. I run my BC996t with arc996t, and it displays the sites on the history logging-nice feature.
I still use my 796, as an additional scanner.

Yeah, if memory serves, Uniden discontinued making the model after the release of the DMA scanners. Still a good radio to have, though. 73s Mike

if you are comfortable with the 796, you can get a "b product" from unidens online store, but for the difference ($80), i would say the 996t is the way to go.
the 796 was discontinued after the ces show in janurary, although a limited supply
did show up in march.
