Can anyone tell me if the reflash file that Uniden is supposed to make available for the 796D is out yet? i was looking at a Uniden download page but I can't tell if any of the files are the one I'm looking for.

If anyone has any info I would appreciate it.

Thanks
Ed

Reflash for rebanding? It can't be, since there's no way that Uniden can know now what Motorola's going to end up doing in a year or two. (There are always bugs that require changing things.)

They likely won't even be STARTING on the update until April of next year after they find out what they need to change.

It looks like the TA is getting the documentation ready and I'll bet the system isn't far behind. The Delaware forum has a thread on rebanding where the new freqs have evidently been posted on the transition site. Maybe they'll be first, as their system is statewide.

DE is a NPSPAC system.

Therefor its frequencies are simply 15 MHz below the old ones.
They were determined LONG ago.

They will not be rebanded first, as the NPSPAC users have to wait for the "lower 120" users to be relocated before they can move.

Spring/summer 2006

I e-mailed Doug at Northwest Central Dispatch here in Illinois and he said the first wave rebanding won't start until late spring early summer of 2006. Further stating the projects are on time. They need to relocated current users on these frequencies that are using them now.

As the communications supervisor of a police department in Wave 1/Region 19 I can tell you that we are active in the negotiation phase of rebanding. I have a meeting to go to on 9/8, as a matter of fact. We have a coalition of departments involved that fall into the 1-120 category, and we're being represented at the county level. The process is moving along. A best case scenario has 1-120 negotiations complete at the end of Q4 2005, and reconfiguration at the end of Q2 2006. Right now both sides are agressively moving forward. It'll be interesting to see what snags we encounter; I'm sure there will be some. It'll also be interesting to be involved in the process from both professional and hobbyist stanpoints.

My understanding is that the process is moving along on time and the only problem is relocating the users currently on these frequencies.

I do not know of any "Planning Funding" requests that have been aproved (as of a week ago).

I do know that many agencies have NOT received suitable channel lists yet. (NPSPAC channels don't count).

All of our agencies have received our tentative frequency assignments. I received a Frequency Proposal Report at the beginning of August. We are proposed to move from our current frequency of 851.3125 to 854.9375. Accompanying the report was a "proposed frequency environment" page that had one other agency (Federal Express, unfortunately, which will/would be data) at 108.87 kilometers distance from our department. There were also numerous pages listing "current frequency environment", replete with Nextel licenses, the closest of which is listed as 88.06 KM distant.

During our initial meeting with Motorola they strongly suggested we have an independent interference survey completed once we received our frequency assignments.

Interesting stuff all around. Apologies to the gentleman who posted asking about the 796D. You can see that it's going to be a while before this actually happens. While Uniden is confident that it will not be a big issue for them, I think they're waiting for a "live example" before they can do anything. I have read somewhere that these flash upgrades will afford the opportunity for using the radio in both rebanded and non-rebanded areas if need be. I probably read that here but I can't remember the specific thread.

Do they specify the format of the control channel data? Are they just the FCC frequency designators or are they the Motorola channel plan? There are a lot more issues than just the frequencies involved (which have been known for many months).

Could the expansion slot in the 796D be a candidate for this? Or does it have other uses? -Rod-

All the FCC (TA) is giving is frequencies.

The vendors have to make their systems work.

That's the big problem, Joe, not the frequency changes. You hit it dead center, right in the middle of the head. Even after a few live systems are in the field, there may be changes necessitated by some weird, never-thought-of nonsense occurring, like data sensitivity due to some sloppy code, or something no one has ever come across yet. And Uniden (and GRE, and any other scanner manufacturers) can't even begin to finalize the updates until Motorola finalizes the system.

So asking when the update will be ready is like teaching a cave man how to manufacture a cigarette lighter - the underlying technology isn't there yet (in this case, the data that the CC will be sending isn't finalized yet).

Sounds like they are not using a very efficient process for their rebanding.

Do you know if they are trying to do it them selves?

That'd be the hatch door on the back of the reciever right below the serial port. Something's gotta go in there, right? -Rod-

Expansion Slot

Hello,

The "expansion slot" is where the digital card is located, The card is standard on the 296D/796D and optional on the 250D/785D.
