While I do most of my serious scanner listening on either a 396 or 996, I have a 796D in my garage.

Since the Louisville MetroSafe system (a P25 800 trunking system), isn't too far off for full implementation, I programmed my 796D with all of the frequencies that are associated with this system, along with the talkgroups.

I am a fire guy who has a portable for testing purposes on this system. With the 796D scanning the system, I can key up on the system, and get an "Ok to talk" chirp. However, the 796D continues to scan, and does not stop on the talkgroup. When I unkey the portable, then the 796D stops scanning and displays the talkgroup ID and associated alpha tag. It does that on both ID Scan and ID Search.

I ain't got much hair to pull out, but if I had some, I certainly would.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what I can do to resolve this situation, short of asking Santa for another 996?

Thanks!

Just a guess, but I'd bet as you are transmitting on your hand-held radio, you are de-sensing the scanner and it's not picking up anything as long as the two-way is transmitting. As soon as you release the PTT button and the radio stops transmitting, the scanner then receives the control channel and sees the active talk group.

Try parking the scanner on the control channel and key up your radio. I'll bet the scanner stops hearing the control channel data or hears a lot of noise...

Well, by golly, that seems to be the issue. I have the actual antenna up in the attic of the garage, and silly me, thought it was far enough away. But I guess having the radio close to the scanner causes a headache for it. Learn something new every day.

Thanks for the advice!
