Is there any justification for having a dedicated 796D thread? Anyhow, I have a question:

I emailed Uniden last week and got no reply though they state they answer within 24 hours. Right.

The purpose of the VFO on the radio is what exactly? I know it's a variable frequency oscillator but it appears to be nothing more than a manual channel changer. ****. I used to have one of THOSE on my TV...

Or is it the same as a BFO? Nothing in the manual suggests or denies that the radio will handle SSB. The manual is next to useless...thx :D -Rod-

It does act as a channel changer, or a frequency changer, depending on if you've pushed the VFO knob in or not. Also let's you program your alpha-tags in, if you're not using software to do that.

Yes, the Uniden manual is practically useless.

You will find references in the manual that mention scrolling. Guess what, this knob is what you use to scroll. How intuitive is that?

I'm glad I have worked for Heathkit for over 30 years as a technical writer and learned how to write manuals so they are understandable!

Is Heathkit still around? A kid I grew up with, we jointly bought and built a Heathkit CB radidio back in the mid-late 60's. Been awhile ;)

Anyhow, does the 796D do SSB or no? It would seem not... -Rod-
