This weekend is the Barstow to Vegas Police Run and radio is used for coordination. For something different to monitor try 868.0125 (MA 4) and 866.0125 (MA Calling). They have been heard in the repeater and simplex modes in Las Vegas. These are in non-trunking mode so most any scanner can be programmed for them.

toughlife what is the Barstow to Vegas Police Run? I guess since I'm new to southern Nevada that I am not familiar with this event. I plugged those those two mutual aid frequencies in and sat down to "Catch Me if You Can."(3:30 PM). I got throught the opening credits and the first scene, and the next thing I knew it was 2 AM and I was still on the couch! I guess I was pretty tired.
Barstow to Las Vegas Run
This is a running competition consisting of individual law enforcement officers from many different agencies in the Western U.S. Each team represents a specific agency within a local, state, or federal jurisdication.
The race has been run for many years although I do not recall how many.
To assist in relaying information from checkpoint to checkpoint ham radio operators have played a major role. Further, public safety frequencies have been used by some of the participating departments. Sometimes they use freqs. licensed to their own agency even if they are way out of their jurisdiction and it can be interesting hunting them down. With the implementation of repeaters for the 800 MHz mutual aid channels in the Las Vegas area they have become much more popular to use. A specific runner does not run the entire race but simply a segment of it. I enjoy listening as it is something different.

Actually, the event was the "Baker to Vegas" run. Many departments used their own frequencies for coordination. They used a GMRS freq. to coordinate all of the runner follow vehicles.
