I have a BC 245 xlt and I am wondering if there is a preamp made that will work with this hand held?

Preamps are pretty much radio independent. As long as you can put them in the antenna line between the receiver and the antenna they will work. You need to look at the frequency coverage of preamps when you are looking at them. Also, remember that all a preamp does is amplify everything; noise and signal, so if you are trying to get something from nothing you are going to be disappointed. I am not sure how sensitive the 245 is, but preamps can easely overload the front end of a receiver.

Lou is right. Amps can be bad, Or they can be a good thing. The only way to know is to try. Here is a very good 800 MHz Amp.

If you live in a metro city, it's probally not the best idea. But, if you live in a somewhat non metro area it just might work. I have had both success and failure with amps. Most times though it's failure
